Are you rich?

New posts
I like this quote from the site. It makes me think of things in a different way.. I always think of how well off I am in terms of what I don't have and can't buy. But when I realize that I'm richer than 99% of the world, it makes things seem a little different. I have never, and I would guess that no one on this board has ever, been in a situation where I couldn't buy food, or shoes.
Another sobering thing.. guess what the median income in the world is?
$850 a YEAR. That's only $2.33 a day.

I didn't grow up with money, and when my father left my mother when I was 10 with 4 kids to raise on her own, there were some really rough times like rationing milk, and a new pair of shoes, yeah sure, if our toe wasn't coming out of the tip yet, dream on.
I was raised though that if you have your health, are loved and learn to love that you have all the riches you will ever need.
The finest memories I have are when we made Xmas gifts for each.

Fortunately, all of us came up well, own homes, got educations, happily married and are still a close knit family. We make it a point to help people who are less fortunate than us, and even though we have the money now, we still make each other Xmas ornaments because it is special.

And even though I have lost my full health to Lyme disease, I still try to get up in the morning with a smile on my face, still volunteer at the school for children with autism when I can, and help other people who have this disease seek doctors and explanations.
It could be a lot worse.

Oh, I didn't grow up with money, either. By far. I remember washing my hair with dish soap when we were out of shampoo and it was a few days til payday.. and taking a lightbulb from one room to another, because we were out. I grew up in a 900 sq ft. house, 3 br, 1 ba.. and I had 4 sisters, 3 older, so I very rarely got a "new" anything.
Making Christmas gifts for each other was a frequency in our house, too.
We lived below the federal poverty level for most of my life. But.. my parents' income would still qualify us in the top 5% or so of the world.
Puts it in perspective. :D

We live in a grayt country that has programs to help the less fortunate and for those who want to help themselves.
Unfortunately 3rd world countries do not have these things and yes, it does put things in real perspective.;-) so thanks for posting this thread.
PM me your info, and I will send you a "Mango Original" ornament this year!

Y'know, that would be a great idea. We should have a handmade ornament exchange. :)
