Layoffs

New posts
I have it on good authority that many of the Legendary workers who were laid off did'nt have any idea it was coming.

That's the #1 rule of management--

"Never let them see what's coming, always keep them in the dark."
(Otherwise they'll bolt before you're fully ready to take up the slack.)

------------------------------
Faced with the economic situation we are in (recession),
it is only the foolish who live like there's always another paycheck coming next week.

Lots of lay off this week.

NEW YORK (MarketWatch) -- ....Sallie Mae, said it would lay off about 3% of its workforce to cut costs in the face of shrinking federal subsidies and other financial pressures, The Washington Post reports in its Friday edition.
The company is eliminating 350 of its approximately 11,000 employees at 26 locations around the U.S., the Post said.
In an e-mail to employees, Sallie Mae President C.E. Andrews said the company aims to find ways to reduce operating expenses by 20% by 2010, which will entail additional job cuts, the Post reported.
The locations hardest hit by the current round of layoffs include Fishers, Ind.; Wilkes Barre, Pa.; and Killeen, Tex., where Sallie Mae has customer service call centers.

WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) -- Sprint Nextel Corp. said Friday it would eliminate 4,000 jobs and close 8% of company-owned retail stores amid the loss of more key customers to rivals.

Both of these are huge employers on the PanHandle.

This is an ugly ploy all the telephone related companies do every four years. I've seen it over and over and over. AT&T is the worse abuser of this practice.

They scare employees that they are going to get laid off, then they offer an early retirement package. They will pay a compensation (usually one years salary), if the employees retire before they are qualified for 100% of their retirement pay. Usually, when they pull this, there are a lot of people at the 80% level and they don't want to lose the benefits they have, so they panic. What's worse is if they are union employees, the union contributes to the panic.

The get scared into accepting less and the telephone companies all come out on top. Think about how much money is not paid to retirees over a life time if they agree to retire when they only qualify for 80%. Millions.

Greedy companies... That is all this is.
