January 19 -- National Day of Service

President-Elect Obama has called for a National Day of Service on the day before his inauguration.

A quick search shows that Alys Beach has done a great job of organizing a toy/food drive, and I look forward to participating in that...but I'm wondering if anyone can think of another service project? Something that involves a community effort?

I thought of SWCC's great July 5th clean-up at Grayton. It's a good model, but Grayton's actually pretty clean right now. Anyone have any suggestions for a good project?

We have plenty of former sheriff's deputies for that. I mean inmates.

Perhaps Caring and Sharing or Alaqua could use some help then?

Or maybe take the dogs to visit a retirement community.

No, he's trying to get people involved with their communities. I believe he has helped Dr. King realize his dream and is moving on from Dr. King's primary goal of racial equality.

Excellent idea! Two organizations that make a difference.
Last week's Beach Breeze had an article on Alaqua. One of their reporters adopted a couple of dogs. Article said animal population is up due to the economy, and Alaqua needs volunteers.
I posted before Christmas about the need to refill the food pantry at Caring and Sharing all year, not just at the holidays. Maybe a food drive for Caring and Sharing and a work day at Alaqua? Or perhaps C&S has a big project and they could use a work day too?

I got the email about this, but I've thought about it a lot more since Punzy's post. I think it is frankly a brilliant idea, aside from the general themes of coming together and national service. Not only are the food pantries running low after Christmas, it is a school holiday and a fine way to honor MLK.

These are all great ideas. I think I will probably take the kids to deliver some food to our local pantry/large charity, then maybe drive around and look for some places to pick up trash. I'll be looking out for other organized events though.
