Wow, no sense of humor here. Now ugga's little rant got very little feedback, wonder why that is...as to the comment(or dig) about Republican religion and a post that I made on another thread...that mosque near the 9-11 site is not just a church, it is something totally different. It is going to be a in your face structure that will have a lot of emotional impact on many people. You would think that there would be a little sensitivity here...I feel that they (the group wishing to build here) are giving us the finger and because we have become so politically correct, fair, and downright cowardly in standing up for ourselves, the building is going to be erected. There are times that just because something is right, doesn't mean that it should be done... It mattesr that some of us lost love ones and they were murdered by the same religion that will occupy this mosque... that I can not overlook, and really don't think I ever will be able to forgive, not enough time left in my life to change. I will not say anymore.
I find that it is a constant battle on these forums...I'm doing it too..we no longer
discuss, we take pot shots at each other or hurtful digs...think I will take a week off and regroup..I'm tired of it all.

Welcome to the SoWal political forum.

It's a non-descript reformist mosque in a city full of Muslims, many of whom lost loved ones, also Muslims, on 9/11. I see the erection of a house of worship as business as usual, not that I am by any means a proponent of religion, but religion in and of itself never killed anyone. It's the people behind it. Almost 9 years after 9-11, I fail to see a connection between the events of that day, and people of various faiths going about their day to day activities in the present. For an example of utter tactless insensitivity, I think of Charleton Heston staging a big NRA rally in Columbine, just weeks after the shooting.

Anyone who takes politics too seriously is part of our problem in this country. Too many people being sick and tired. Notice that political coverage is increasing and daytime soap operas are getting canceled?

And on a related note - isn't it time we started treating churches for what they are and make them pay taxes like any other business?

It's easier to control people when you can divide them into little camps and let them fight among themselves. The Nazis were a case study in this...first, turn the "other" into caricatures with the use of stereotypes that make the target audience feel smarter, superior, and entitled. Then, foster a feeling of contempt for the other side. Once you've dehumanized the other group in the minds of your supporters, summarily dismiss all their ideas as rubbish unworthy of your time. Push the two groups further and further apart, and eventually everyone will lose sight of the simple fact that they all want the same outcome -- a safe and prosperous county/state/country.

I know Republican vegetarians, and Democrat gun enthusiasts. The difference? One believes the wealthy are best able to determine the future direction of our country, and one group believes that rule by concensus leads to a more stable, just, and prosperous future. The goals are the same, and we are all trying to find a balance between taxes and regulation and public health.

Don't lose sight of the fact that we are all Americans, and the best form of government is never single party rule -- it's the balance between the two extremes responding to the times that makes us a strong and vibrant country.

we are a single corporate party system, posing as the old 2 party. most progressive legislation is repub retread proposals thrown as bone to the public....healthcare for example sans public option. a few thousand people control this country. a few percentage points of folks control over half the wealth, and that's the way it shall stay barring revolution. we usually do well with the benevolent aplha cabal.

a sense of humor is one thing. nastiness is quite another. most people who have been around these forums know the difference very well. we've seen it come and we've seen it go. we've even participated. but we have learned and we do expect better from ourselves. most everyone who stays around here (and there are many long timers!) learns to be friends and respect opinions of each other, and poke fun in a respectful way. we even learn something new now and then and change our opinions - when good conversation happens among good people.

this thread does serve a purpose. we can all (most) agree that this kind of email is a waste of time and we tend to delete them (if we still receive them from friends - I don't anymore - most of my friends have moved on to more practical use of electronic mail).. and that its divisive nature is representative of no one here.

I can't believe anyone takes this stuff seriously. It doesn't hurt unless you let it. It doesn't describe you unless you become it.

It is what it is, nothing.

Grammy, as to why Ugga's post got little response, I find it depends on who is the sitting President. When Bush was in, the jokes flew left and right about him, his lack of pronunciation, his lack of intelligence, etc etc. and those that supported him were thinned skinned about it. Now that Obama is President the party has simply changed. The jokes are about him and now those that don't want to take it have changed.

I did not find the ones about Bush/Republicans amusing and I don't find the ones about Obama/Democrats amusing. Not many will agree to that though.

I will say the topic was probably better suited for the Lounge instead of Political Disccusions.
