A couple of technologies will be coming together soon to give you a real experience of flying like superman. I expect Disney or some other entertainment company will team with google to create a ride. It will be a harness device in which you hang that gives freedom of movement. Gestures with your arms and hands will control where you move through a 180 degree high definition display. Combined with puffs of air and sound you will get lost in the experience. I could see this evolving into a 360 degree or nearly spherical display.
Even a 180 degree display may be too disconcerting for a lot of folks and may cause fear or motion sickness. The ride may end up being a plane or other airship you control like a simulator.
The first video is an HD Google earth display currently touring at invitaion-only trade shows. it consists of multiple HD monitors displayed vertically. The 2nd video is a gesture-driven display technology from MIT. A "Virtual flying" ride is actually not as complicated because cameras can be used to monitor and interpret a person's movements, but the MIT project hints at future possibilities for many other applications as well.
