Family Values and Cappuccino

South Walton is set to get its third Starbuck?s establishment soon. The news of yet another corporate franchise opening in an area known for Mom and Pop restaurants and shops is raising the ire of locals.

?There?s a growing concern for the survival of our favorite locally owned coffee shops in the face of this corporate blitzkrieg?, said local Peter Smith.

Starbucks has been putting on a major charm offensive to win over its dissenters. ?We will be marketing 2 unique products here in the 30-A corridor, our Coastal Lake Chai Tea and our Baby Latte drinks.?, said a Starbuck?s spokesperson.

Critics have pointed out the cynical attempt to be environmentally conscious in the case of the Coastal Lake Chai and the blatant pandering to the ?Family Values? crowd with the Baby (some joke Boobie) Latte drink.

?The Coastal Lake Chai Tea beverage is marketed to reflect the tea colored lake system along south Walton?s shoreline?, said Smith. He added dryly ?It?s a little ironic that the recycled paper used to make the cups is of such poor quality that it often bursts and spills tea all over the place, kinda the same way those lakes burst out into the gulf??

The Baby Latte drink is actually a re-packaged espresso. Caffeine is one of the substances that will pass through a nursing mothers system, so the Baby Latte product is being sold as a way to let everyone in the family, even 3 month old junior, to enjoy a little morning cup o? joe. ?If a nursing mother jumps around a bit, I guess they could sell that as cappuccino?, noted Smith.

Most area business analysts believe that Starbuck?s tactic will eventually work. ?Remember a few years ago when Subway came to the area? They realized that in a place with no concept of public transportation their name just wouldn?t connect with the locals, and so they became SUVway; and have gone on to dominate the local market.?
