fire the teachers and the secretaries, but increase salaries for political appointee?

New posts
a man who spent 70 plus million in stolen money to become elected goes without pay? how does he do it?

There are some proposals floating around out there in assorted Florida Medicare reform bills that could send a whole boatload of state dollars to a chain of medical clinics he's a major owner in.

Story was in the Tampa Buzz a while back.

? Governor Scott would pay himself a salary, say about what a beginning teacher or firefighter makes and live on that for the length of his tenure as governor;

That would be an interesting offer. I wish politicians were noble enough to do something like this but it's a rare quality for them, if it exists at all.

? He would expect his Executive Staff to take the same rate of pay/pension/benefit cuts that everyone else is taking under his administration;

Technically these pension benefits are set by the same state law. The governor gets a really good contribution percentage, although not as high as high risk employees like firefighters -

Regular Employee 9.63%
DROP participants 11.14%
Special Risk Administrative Support 12.10%
Senior Management Service 13.43%
Legislators 15.20%
Governor, Lt. Governor, Cabinet Officers 15.20%
State Attorney, Public Defenders 15.20%
County Elected Officers 17.50%
Justices, Judges 20.65%
Special Risk 22.11%

By taking a 1 cent salary, he's forfeiting everything. So essentially he's gone even further than your suggestion. He obviously has no need for these benefits anyway, so I think this was the right thing for him to do.

? He would put his own money into a trust that would not be touched as long as he was Governor, so that he could not say at some point: ?I?m not taking a salary, so I don?t have to answer to the citizens, the media, the legislature??

I believe that's what he did, or at least said he was going to do.

? He would spend a week as a caseworker for the Department of Family and Children; a week as a teacher; a week as a firefighter; a week as traffic engineer with DOT; a week with a bridge maintenance crew; a corrections officer; a maintenance person at a Community College; a retiree on a fixed income?

When would he actually get around to governing? Next year? I smell an ulterior plot on your part. :D

? He would approach the idea of health, safety, and welfare of the citizens of Florida not from a profit making mindset, but from a quality of life point of view.

? He would trade his arrogance for an ounce of humility; his self-centeredness for some empathy; and his lack of understanding of what government is about, for some education.

Well here I think you're just being a cynic.

If I had my way, our Governor would be a good steward of the land, the people, and the environment of our great state.

He's only been in office a month and a half! Give the guy a chance!

Does anybody have a link to this story? I'd like to read it.

I don't have a problem with a Governor (or a mayor like Bloomberg) not taking any pay. If they can afford not to, it saves us money and is a nice gesture.

And as far as benefits, I think there should only be 2 categories - regular and special risk. Politicians don't deserve significantly larger contributions.

I don't agree with the expansion of the governor's staff and the costs expanded for the executive branch. That said, I'm with 30ashopper. I gave President Obama six months to show what he could do. The least that should be done is to give Governor Rick Scott the same.
