Gov. Scott takes over

New posts
There really is no 'on your own time' with the job, Florida being a disaster-prone state and all, with not all of those disasters having a nice 72 hour cone of uncertainty. IIRC, South Carolina almost had a major flood or wildfire incident while Mark Sanford was 'hiking the Apalachian Trail' and you can only delegate so much responsibility to a lt. governor while you're on vacation.

I don't care where he is going either if he's on his own time but, if he is on state business, I believe it is appropriate for a whole bunch of reasons to file a flight plan; and leave an intinerary with media availability noted.

The Governor's schedule is public so ascertaining a flight plan would be just a matter of thinking it through.

I'm not worried about him traveling to publicly announced appearances, I'm worried about him jetting around with lobbyists and special interests holding meetings not on his schedule.

You mean Scott might end up being one of the most secretive governors we've ever had... what a shocker! :sarc:

I read somewhere that he has said it will not be if he chooses for it not to be, nor will he file a flight plan. Well, for security reasons I think he must do both; and for gov in sunshine purposes, I feel he needs to release both the schedule and the itinerary...and I too am very worried about lobbyists on closed airplanes...I once worked for a female elected official who had to follow another governor into a men's room to prevent a secret meeting with the Gov and the lobbyists...we continued the meeting with my boss sitting on the counter the sink...

If the governor or anybody else uses the airways of this nation or is flying IFR, they must file a flight plan. Whether it is open to public scrutiny or not, I do not know, but I can guarantee the FAA will know where he is and where he is going.

I know where he's going, but I've tried my best to save him.

Cabinet to Rick Scott: No, you can't veto our regulations - St. Petersburg Times

Observers say Scott's request of the Florida Cabinet shows an attempt to run the state as a corporate CEO would, having the final say on all decisions.

But as a leader in state government, that's not possible.

"Governors always like to have control over all the executive agencies. But constitutionally, they simply can't," said Susan MacManus, a political science professor at the University of South Florida.

Richard Scher, a University of Florida political science professor, called it a power grab.

"My guess, and it's purely a guess, is this is a very calculated move on Scott's part. I would say he is interested in grabbing as much power as he can in an attempt to control the direction of the state," he said. "He's trying to show these guys that he intends to be the boss."

But he's not.
