aka - the mouthful power plant...

Clean energy solutions provider ( < their words ) Rentech has received the final air permit from the Florida Department of Environmental Protection for its proposed Port St Joe Renewable Energy Center in Florida, US.

The biomass integrated gasification combined-cycle project has now secured all significant permits from the US state of Florida to allow start of construction of the facility.

The project will utilise the Rentech-SilvaGas biomass gasifier to provide synthesis gas to a combined-cycle power plant to generate about 55MW net of baseload electric power from about 930 dry tons per day of woody biomass.

News 7 Reports:
A pediatrician from Washington State also planned to address the Gulf County Commission Tuesday night, about long term impacts and health hazards. Dr. Bill Sammons said he left the meeting early because it ran longer than expected. As he was leaving, he told us he believes the plant poses potential health risks, particularly the release of toxins into the air.

"When you breathe these in, they're so small that you breathe them into the lung and then they get into your body and they interfere with every bioregulatory process in your body" says Dr. Sammons.

So would they be using wood waste from other industy? Isn't this "cleaner" than using coal? Just curious - not my field of expertise...

Coal is one of the nastiest things you can burn. How is burning biomass not a huge health improvement?
