Went to see Jeff Dunham in Pensacola last night. It was great! He mainly did material from his Chaos DVD but interspersed was a lot of new stuff as well. He runs a trivia slide show before his actual performance which was funny, too.
The only complaints I have are with the civic center. The doors did not open on time much less early, so there were lots of cranky people standing outside in the cold wind.
The other complaint was they did not enforce the “no smoking” code. At intermission there was so much smoke in the lobby, it was like being downwind of a controlled burn.
Lots of people have never heard of Jeff; I guess maybe they’re Comedy Central deprived. But according to the biopic that was done on him a couple of months ago, he is the most popular comedian in the world. He told us last night, his You Tube videos have garnered half a billion hits, and those coming from the U.S. were third.
We weren’t in the nosebleed section but we weren’t on the floor either so we watched the performance on the big screen over the stage. I wish we could have been closer. I saw Jeff in a comedy club more than 30 years ago. Watching him and Peanuts interact is one of the funniest things I have ever seen. The expressions on both their faces are priceless. You get sucked into their world and it doesn’t take but a few minutes to believe you are watching two different creatures performing.
He got a standing ovation and then used an air gun to launch dolls into the audience. He also presented a $10,000 check to the local food bank, something he apparently does every appearance or at least quite frequently. The money comes from the Jeff Dunham Fund.
He is a comedian that is highly appreciative of his audience and remains humble and down to earth. He always talks about his kids and family and even brought his dog on stage.
