July's bed tax numbers are in for South Walton. They are the highest in the Tourist Development Council's history.
Businesses now have the numbers to back up what they said was their busiest month ever.
July's bed tax numbers show a 53 percent increase from last July’s numbers that were down because of the oil spill. TDC officials say the spike in visitors might be because they couldn't come last July.
They also say their new marketing campaign has helped, as well as working together with their lodging partners, but they do admit they were a little surprised to see how high July’s numbers were.
"We expected the numbers to come in very good, but we did not expect them to come in at record pace, so we are excited with the end result. 53 percent is not only significant year over year, but by far the largest collection we've ever had in the TDC," said TDC Executive Director Dawn Moliterno.
TDC officials say their lodging partners reported a strong August as well, but aren't expecting the numbers to exceed July’s.
