hey mermaid - i just saw on the wish tv 8 website people had a bunch of mail stolen in zionsville - what a bummer ! we had that exact thing happen to us 2 years ago, and it was a huge mess. they ended up cashing two $500 checks on our account that of course bounced because i had just paid bills. i have never thought about people taking stuff right out of your mailbox, esp. in broad daylight, but they hit several subdivisions in this end of town and caused a lot of headaches. thankfully i didn't have any personal info on the check just address and phone number, and we changed our checking account within one day of it happening. it helped to be obsessed with the internet and checking my bank balance all the time !

Something similar happened to my sister when we were were going on our yearly beach trip. My niece, who was 8 at the time, sent a letter to her cousin about the trip. Someone stole the mail, read the letter, and broke into their home while we were gone. It was a mess and ruined the vacation. Since that time, I take my mail to the post office. A little more trouble, but certain their will be no problems.

we now either take our mail to the post office, or walk it down to the mailman when he gets here. the police also recommended we get a locking mailbox which we did, because i guess the dirtbags also go around and just steal the credit card offers people are always receiving, and open accounts in their names. it's a pitiful society when you can't even put your mail in your own mailbox, isn't it ?

(For those not aware of Indiana geography, Zionsville is a town just outside of Indianapolis.)

How awful to have mail stolen! Knock on wood; we haven't had to deal with that. Our mail is too much of a pain in the neck to access. First you have to walk down a long driveway, so someone would definitely notice you. Then you have to walk up five steps to the front door to the box. It's not as convenient as boxes that are at the edge of the street, lined up like nine pins, easy for the taking.

I've had to set up a temporary mail box at the bottom of the steps because of the ice and snow. No one can use our front door steps because it's a deathtrap in the winter! The overhanging gutter drips, then it freezes and there's nothing to be done about it (we've tried every trick in the book). Now I have to use the back door and walk completely around the house to the front to get our mail. All this extra exercise I don't want!
