Most media outlets are reporting that since there are now "only" 12-15 predicted tropical storms for this season, that this is good news. Well, if you look at the facts, this is not good news. Here's why: NOAA has updated the forecast to 12-15 storms, down from 13-16 which were predicted in May of this year. Most news sources are calling this "good news," and a change in the initial forecast. This is NOT the case at all. The fact is, the date is now August 8th, two months of the six months which emcompass hurricane season (June 1st-November 30th) have now passed. So if you think about it, 12-15 storms from August to November is quite a lot and is still above average, which they do acknowledge. Also, the 12-15 range does not account for the 3 tropical storms which have already developed this season. So this is not reason to celebrate as the media is reporting and now beginning to somewhat "bash" forecasters for. Along with the updated forecast, NOAA released a statement which says that shear will begin subsiding in the coming weeks, and warmer than average ocean temperatures, along with positive trade winds blowing off of the African continent will increase the risk for Cape Verde season storms.
