I'm thinking on it... your words of wisdom (especially here in the lounge) are highly valued!

I'd love to do both but I bet I won't. For medical reasons, I cannot be a vegetarian, but I eat as little meat as possible while still fulfilling doc's orders. After a year of feeling low (thyroid crash, whole system crash, finally getting levels into proper range and starting to feel human again), I am feeling stronger and can probably manage some gentle yoga. Someone please send me the willpower and drive to do it.

well, it seems like we do so little meat that going veg wouldn't be a big deal. but I would miss some meat dishes for sure. maybe to try it for a month (Oct) would be a good thing to do for me.

the yoga thing - we have tons of classes around here now (finally!). I'm looking for the motivation to get started back (its been a few years). gentle yoga for sure!

My hubby is wearing a tshirt right now that says "I didn't crawl to the top of the food chain to eat vegetables", I bought it from him and agree-I'm a good country girl and was raised eating cattle that I'd bottle fed as a calf.

As for yoga, I tried it and sucked; guess I'll stick with cardio and weights!!

I could do veggie for a month, but not yoga. It kills my knees.

I have runner's knee because of so many years of running. I am currently having PT for my knees and feet due to running. As I type this, I am icing my knees. I hate it that I can't run anymore. I love running and enjoying nature as I run.

Toots, I might try the veggies with you for a month. I don't think I'd really miss meat all that much. As most of you know, I'm a bread and cheese girl. My two favorite food groups. Anyway, I wouldn't mind giving it a whirl if you won't make me eat zucchini or broccoli or beets...wait, maybe I should rethink this.

and I'm a pasta and potato girl. so who cares about meat?

actually, I would like to do the veg thing for one month for one reason: to eat more veggies and grains and just kind of rework my whole diet. don't have to go veggie to do that, but it would be interesting to try.

have you ever tried yoga? a gentle yoga such as hatha sounds like exactly what you need to stretch and strengthen ligaments and body. one thing I've learned (and haven't heeded much lately) is that the health and fitness of the whole body is necessary to support any weak spots such as an ankle or knee.

many PTs actually use yoga and pilates methods for stretching and core strengthening to support the whole body.

here is just one little example I found:
Yoga Cures: Rehab Runner?s Knee

Maybe you run marathons, maybe you just run after taxis in stilettos. No matter how you got them, weak, beat-up knees are dangerous. ?They?re easily reinjured, difficult to operate on, and slow to heal,? says Anastasia Dorohova, a Jivamukti yoga instructor who specializes in sports injuries.

The Fix: The best way to protect these knobby joints is regularly stretching and strengthening the ligaments and surrounding muscles, plus opening the hips (tight hip joints don?t let knees move the way they should). Here are Dorohova?s preventive remedies; she stresses that anyone who already has a knee injury should work closely with a qualified teacher.

Hero: Kneel on a mat or blanket. Bring your knees together and spread your heels slightly wider than your hips, keeping the tops of your feet on the floor. Exhale and lower your butt to the floor between your heels, using your arms for support. If this is too uncomfortable, sit on a yoga block or folded blankets. Place your hands on your thighs, and hold for up to 20 breaths. Practice once a day.

Chair: Stand with your feet 6 inches apart and raise your arms overhead. Now sit down on an imaginary chair, bending your knees and sticking your butt back behind you. Your torso will lean forward slightly. Bring your thighs as close to parallel to the floor as possible. Hold for at least five breaths, then slowly come up. Repeat two times.
