 Our 3 night stay in a cabin at Chickasaw State Park is coming up one week from this Tuesday. Husband is totally not looking forward to this, he informed me yesterday. He says our dog is 12 and is too old to be taken somewhere away from the environment he is used to, which is home. He says because of his age he won't be able to do alot of the walking around you think. I know he won't but I wasn't going to be having the dog do alot of walking. No more than what he gets in the morning at home! He is complaining saying we won't be able to go anywhere. And unfortunately, the state park rules say that no pet can be left unattended in a cabin for you to go do things, for instance, eat at the restaurant they have, go horseback riding, etc! When you pay $88.00 a night for this place, I would not think they can really enforce something like that! People do want to go walk around the trails, dogs are permitted on those, and go eat at the restaurant and go to the little store they have, and dogs are not allowed in those places. So, if you want to do these things, then you have to leave them in the cabin. Hubby says he wants to relax. I said that is what you will be doing there. A nice cabin in the state park with a fireplace and a deck with a grill sounds like relaxation to me! Is this really worth it for us to still go if they have these rules??? So, does this not seem ridiculous???

Diabetic dog = board at your vet. He will be safe and get the proper medical care. Will it be the happiest he has ever been in his life? Probably not. But he will be alive when you get back and you will have the peace of mind knowing that he is under the care of your vet while you are gone. It sounds like your alternatives are board him or don't go. The setup where you are going does not sound like it will work for your situation. Actually, it sounds like they really don't want dogs there.

we cant go and do things b/c of our "horse of a dog" we just try and find a pet sitter, we do however do somtimes have to put him in jail. (kennel) Sometimes you have to do for yourself. I know your pup is old though, what a hard decision...

Sounds like a better alternative might be, to have a girls weekend.:clap_1: I'm sure, that you're deserving of one! It doesn't really appear like hubby's too interested, in the cabin idea. He may be using the dog issues, more as an excuse. Though, there are legitimate reasons. The park's smokin' somethin', to have the "no pet left in cabin" rule!:idontno: All they need to do, is require a pet deposit! You may simply need to go up the "food chain", in expressing your concerns with the park. They're not being realistic, at all!:bang: Keep us posted!

Good luck!

Ladyd......sounds like Diane4145 has a great suggestion. I know what it is like to have old animalbabies. We love to travel but finally bought a Winnebago so that we could take an older kitty with us because I wouldn't leave him and we couldn't find a winter rental that would let us bring him along. If hubby is willing to stay home with your dog, you can go and have a great time.....Just my 2 cents..........

Ocean Lover, they are close, but have 6 cats. The woman at the office there said that people do leave their pets in the cabin when they want to go do things, even though the State Park rules try to control that. But they have two cabins that are pet friendly cabins. They are allowed in certain areas. I just figured I'd find somewhere we could go that was close and would allow dogs as my husband and myself didn't want to go off and leave him in the vet! He howled like you wouldn't believe after being left 9 days. And as for a diabetic dog being in good hands in the vet while on vacation. His mama's sugar dropped to 30 while we were at the beach several years ago. They had to put her in ICU. We are paying $10 extra per night for the dog. I think he would be fine there as his blood sugar is stable. And he will be with us. And there are no stairs to climb. Hubby will have to like it or lump it as I am looking forward to this getaway for us.

Sounds like it won't be much of a get-a-way for either of you if hubby feels like he's having to "like it or lump it". I'd feel him out and see if he really wants to go in the first place. If he doesn't, I'd consider the suggestions above - go with some girlfriends and have a good time.

He says we will try it! He just thinks that with our dog's age that he will not be happy with a change of scenery. Like elderly people don't like change. But I think he will be fine as long as he is with us. I will make sure with the vet who is overseeing his diabetes treatment, that this will be an ok thing to do, I would think as long as his sugar is stable like it is, and he is eating and drinking normally, things should be ok!
