Really? still with the purple flags.

Sharks are not considered marine pests and do not get purple flags. The flags are up right now for Portugese Man-Of-War but not many have been seen.

Is the plural Portugese Men-Of-War? Mans-Of-War? Where did that name come from anyhow?

Its named after an ancient sailing vessel from Portugal that it vaguely resembles. ;-)

Au contraire, mon frere.

Purple or blue flags may occasionally be seen on ocean beaches. These denote "dangerous marine life" in the water, according to the Florida Department of Health. This includes sharks, jellyfish and other dangerous animals in the water. The use of the purple or blue depends on the geographic locale (Florida uses purple).

I can't find a definition in any Florida Statute and I know these cited authorities are weak, but they are the best definitions I can find. I actually had a friend tell me that either a deckhand or lifeguard (I can't for the life of me remember which now) told him that was why the purple flags were out.

It could be sharks and jellyfish.

Btw, the plural of "Portuguese man-of-war" is either "Portuguese man-of-wars" or "Portuguese men-of-war." Either is correct. The question so intrigued me that I had to look it up.
