'Ro' Cuchens beach Re-nourishment Project

New posts
Since Ro has already been County Commissioner, wouldn't this fall into doing the same thing again? You are correct that he isn't current County Commissioner, because he was voted out of office after pulling the DEP permit stunts on the properties he built seawalls for and allegedly allowed the County to place dark sand on the beach, which allegedly was purchased by the County from his relatives dirt pit. I don't think we ever heard any follow up on that after he was voted out of office.

Mr. Cuchens did not get voted out of office, he chose not to run for reelection.

A good move on his part. He should have kept it that way.

Just The Facts, Ma'am

I went to Mr. Cuchens site to find out more information. The news story, part of which I pasted here, clearly shows that Comander did the exact right thing. If this is supposed to be another attack by Cuchens against Comander, maybe I have missed the point. The story just confirms that she again chose to do the right thing. So, given that Mr. Cuchens? own web site shows Comander in a good light, why should I consider voting for him?
Here?s the excerpt:

In the letter, Comander wrote that she was ?not part of the budget process in 2006? ? when the family benefit was discussed as part of the compensation package for county commissioners ? nor did she know ?the rules that govern this type of thing.?

?I assumed then, as I do now, that it was a human resources matter and that it was handled correctly,? she wrote. ?What I do know is that I prize my good name and integrity ? and cannot have anyone or group questioning my honesty. I believe I must hold myself to a higher standard (than) any employee or citizen. The people of Walton County have put their faith in me, and I will not betray that trust.

?Therefore, I am requesting that you stop all insurance payments involving my family,? the letter concludes.
The Taxpayers Association found out about the letter through a public-records request filed Monday and sent out a news release announcing the discovery.

When asked why she did not reveal her decision earlier, according to the release, Comander said that it was ?a personal decision and to have publicly disclosed my actions would not have been right. Other commissioners are entitled to make their own determination of the appropriateness of the benefit.?
Commissioner Kenneth Pridgen said Tuesday that he was unaware Comander had written the letter, but added that he asked County Administrator Ronnie Bell during a recent budget meeting to research the issue. Bell is expected to recommend at the commissioners? budget hearings in September whether the county should continue to pick up the tab for family coverage.

Gary Mattison, the county?s human resources director, made an administrative decision in January 2007 to provide full-family coverage to the commissioners, according to Karen DeBeauchamp, the county?s benefits coordinator.

Bob Hudson, president of the association, has estimated that almost $51,000 in taxpayer money has been used to pay the benefit.

Comander?s move, he said, ?is an indication that at least one of the commissioners understands the issue, but our interest is in changing that policy so that it doesn?t happen in the future, and that?s hopefully where we?ll end up with is a change in policy ?

My trend on this has little to do with what the candidates say or do politically. I know Cuchens through business, not politics and have always found him to be honest and a man who keeps his word. I respect him for that. As far as Commander, I know a couple of county employees well and they are adament that she has to go. They tell me she acts on emotions and vindettas and is one who will hug your neck then stab you in the back. This concerns me greatly. So I guess you are basing your support on a set of factors and I am looking at another.
I do know one thing, I do not like the path the county is on or has been on for awhile. I think our county government involves itself in individuals affairs far too much. I do not like the excessive regulation and the difficulty one has to get permits and development orders. I really have not heard anyone address these issues. I don't know if I trust either Cuchens or Commander to fight vigorously against government regulation and intrusion because both have had a chance and have yet to do it although Cuchens seems to be ahead in this regard. Giving lip service to economic development is useless if you allow bureaucrats to drive people crazy with a myriad of regulations, rules and paperwork. I fear that neither will provide any real help on this front. But right this minute I think Cuchens will do more.

To each his own I suppose.
