UPS jobs/locations

My husband I are seriously starting to consider moving from Ohio to the SoWal area. It was always a dream to retire there, but the more I start looking, the more I feel like now might be the right time (with a 1 yr old and parents getting lcoser to retirement themselves). I work as a financial manager for the Air Force so I could easily get a GS-12 job at Eglin (I think), but my husband works for UPS. He's been there almost 5 years and is still "putting in his time" for a driving job. Around here, it's about a 5-8 yr wait. He's said that if we transfer there, he'd start at the bottom and doesn't want to work at 3am again for another 5 years. Anyone know anything about driving jobs at UPS in the area? Does anyone know where the closest location is?

Things just seem to be lining up......people mention things about jobs, seems like we can get a pretty nice place in our price range, and the schools look pretty good, and the people and beach are of course the best......it's just the job thing I need to find out more about.

Thanks to anyone that can help!

Jobs

The job mkt isn't that great. All depends on what you're needs are. I work for St. Joe, and they've just put a hiring freeze on. If it weren't for the benies, I'm not sure what I'd do.

The pay down here is bleak. Been 23 yrs since I've had these low wages.

Check out some websites for what's available and the $$.

Well, we know my husband could get a job at UPS, like a lateral transfer, but like I said it wouldn't be "ideal" to work the 3am shift for another 5 years. But worse came to worse, a GS-12 salary for the gov't is still pretty good.....we'd be fine living on that and his part time work.

But believe me, I can guarentee as bad as the job market is there......it's probably 10x better than Dayton, OH! With the closing of the General Motors plants around us, AK Steele, and many other large corporations, about the only job anyone can get is $10 an hour.....Walmart is actually looking like a nice place to work! Haha!

There is a UPS depot (can't think of a better word) over in Panama City near Mosley High School. Seems like most of the drivers have worked there for years, but it's always worth a try, not sure if it's worth the drive though.

I would recommend finding jobs prior to moving - there are a lot of local folks currently looking for work or barely hanging on and it gets even slower in the fall/winter season.

That said, you'll love not having to shovel snow! :welcome:

I think the main UPS facility is in Ft Walton. Whenever I track something I have ordered, seems like that is where it comes from. Eglin is there, too, so maybe that is where you will wind up. Not as nice as 30A, but IMHO a daily commute to Ft Walton would be tough. I did it briefly, and back when gas was a lot cheaper.

I'm about 30 minutes from downtown FWB, 20 from the Eglin east gate, and about that much from the west end of 30-A. Not a bad location between the daily work obligations and fun places to go on the weekend.

Eglin is in a state of flux right now as they gear up for a big BRAC-related shuffle of programs and missions. Not sure what's currently available in the GS ranks, but it seems to be a very competitive job location because so many officers want to retire (and do) here.

Talked with the husbad last night and he thinks we should wait another year. They are starting a new contract next week, so they have a ton of drivers ready to retire, which will probably be good news for us.

But as far as the Eglin things goes, in the financial management field it's pretty easy to move there, at least between Wright Patt AFB and Eglin. There are very few officiers in the field and they really encourage "moving" around and getting different experiences before becoming upper management. Regardless, I think I'll start looking, but we'll probably push it off another year.

Thanks for the help though!

While I'm not normally big on trying to time the real estate market, there's probably going to be something of a lull late next year between when they move the F-15s out and when the F-35 training group and Green Berets move in, and there might be some reasonable prices to be had from people willing or required to sell now rather than wait until the new folks show up.

After that window though, it's going to be increasingly competitive in for the kind out housing close to base that you're probably looking for. Everything south of I-10 within a reasonable commute to Eglin is effectively 98% built out already save for one large parcel near the college. And while the houses themselves in Crestview (where there is room for the new folks) can be nice, that area just seems to lack what I think of as the characteristics of Florida living, and is more of random generic charmless suburbia.
