Whole Foods Market Destin has formed a new partnership with the Choctawhatchee Basin Alliance (CBA) that allows consumers who purchase items from their new store location to positively impact the health of local waterways in two ways- purchasing items on Earth Day, April 22, 2016, and purchasing raw oysters at the Whole Foods Market’s specialty bar during promotional days.
One of five organizations to be honored during the grand opening week with a ‘One Percent Day’, CBA will be the recipient of 1% of the store’s net sales from Earth Day, Friday, April 22, 2016. The proceeds will provide support to CBA’s environmental education programs in local elementary and middle schools.
CBA’s environmental education programs, Grasses In Classes and Dunes In Schools, focus on growing the next generation of watershed stewards; this makes the programs a natural fit with the Whole Foods core value of advancing environmental stewardship in the communities in which they are located.
Each year, thousands of local youth participating in Dunes In Schools and Grasses In Classes take an active role in the restoration of Choctawhatchee Bay and coastal ecosystems, while learning the value of healthy local waterways. In addition to honoring CBA with a ‘One Percent Day’, Whole Foods will donate the shell from raw oysters purchased at Whole Foods to CBA’s O.Y.S.T.E.R. Shell Recycling Program. CBA’s O.Y.S.T.E.R. (Offer Your Shell To Enhance Restoration) Recycling Program, collects oyster shell that would otherwise be discarded from local seafood restaurants and vendors, and repurposes it to construct oyster habitat in Choctawhatchee Bay.
The oyster reefs provide homes for marine life, control erosion, and improve water clarity and water quality, positively impacting the health of local waterways.
“CBA is always looking for ways to promote community involvement in our efforts. Our new partnership with Whole Foods allows community members who want to get involved with CBA’s mission, a chance to do so through an everyday task. We are very grateful for Whole Foods generosity and willingness to go the extra mile in keeping our local waterways healthy and sustainable. Shop at Whole Foods Market Destin and support CBA!”- Sarah Davis, Fund Development & Marketing Coordinator for CBA.
CBA is non-profit organization responsible for sustaining healthy local waterways through monitoring, education, restoration and research. For 20 years, CBA has promoted water stewardship within the Choctawhatchee watershed, growing the network of supporters who join in CBA’s mission to provide a future for these precious, natural resources.
