Bikes on Road II

needs to get out more
i'm thinking the other thread was closed due to some of silliest sh*t i've seen posted on this board. so, here's some news. the legislature passed a law that went into effect on sunday; motorists are required to give cyclists 3' clearance on florida roadways.

And up here, for some, it is their ONLY transportation, even in the snow. You just have to drive carefully. I wouldn't even consider that they're "in the way." I feel lucky to have a car but some feel lucky to have a job and transportation of any kind.

You're much more generous than I am, JohnRudy. When I'm on my bike, I get pi$$ed at the drivers who are inconsiderate. I think they're louts for thinking the road belongs to them. However, when I'm in my car, I think cyclists are irritating little gnats who get in my way. I want to have my cake and eat it, too. :floor:

No, no, no! I should explain. These people that are on their bikes are VERY considerate. No swerving, no hogging of lanes, etc. They're peddling their little a$$es off at 6:00am & 6pm. I just know they're trying to get to & from work. Where I see it happening the most, there are no sidewalks. I just know they are working at jobs that I wouldn't want - - So more power to them. They deserve my consideration.

Aw, JohnRudy, you're so tender-hearted. If everyone were equally conscientious, there wouldn't be the need for 3' road clearance legislation to protect hapless cyclists from road hog drivers. Now if only there was legislation prohibiting the manufacture of lycra in sizes larger than a 30" waist.

I hear ya on that one!

I travel up and down Mack Bayou road a few times a day. There are now more bicyclists and cars on that road than ever before. The bicyclists range from young kids on their bikes getting to a friends' house, to people (all ages) trying to get to work, to hard core bicyclists in their spandex shorts. Parts of Mack Bayou have NO shoulder at all. The white line is the edge of the road and then there is dirt. I can't tell you how many times I've seen a close call, especially during the week when big trucks are going up and down the road. I sure hope they add a bike lane, or at least add a shoulder to the road, before someone gets seriously injured.

I think the popularity of cycling in the community you live in must have something to do with the way cyclists are treated. In Chattanecka you can't pass a SUV or a Subaru without seeing a bike and or kayak rack. I live on a mountain just outside the Nooga. The road up and down the is very narrow with no shoulder for 90% of the drive. Cyclists go up and down that road all hours of the day. As of yet, I haven't seen a close call. I'm sure there are some, I just haven't seen any. I haven't biked up or down the mountain yet (Don't think I could make the whole climb yet  ). I stay up top. Pleanty of roads on top to for the Otter. I've logged several miles and still no close calls or any rude encounters. I think people are just used to cyclists here. :idontno:
