Please contact your county commissioners and let them know that you are outraged that Eastern Lake is dying because of their inaction and pandering to an individual's needs.
Worth Williams purchased a property near the Eastern Lake outfall. Prior to his purchase he was notified by both the Florida Department of Environmental Protection and Army Corp Of Engineers that due to the meandering and changing location of the outfall, the majority of his property was unbuildable.
After he was cited by both Walton County and the Florida Department of Environmental Protection for violating his permits and destroying a sand dune, and did not correct the problem, Tropical Storm Arlene pushed his "fill" sand into Eastern Lake, damming up the outfall.
The county brought in an engineering firm, whose plan of action to fix the problem and save the lake was approved by the FDEP. Now, not only is Mr. Williams refusing to let them fix the problem HE created by allowing them access through his property to fix it, he is demanding the county abandon its right-of-way, so he can use the property to build a residence.
Apparently if I want more ocean front property, all I need to do is destroy a rare coastal dune lake, refuse to take responsibility, and pull some political strings.
Eastern Lake is not just for its property owners, but all of the tourists and locals who use the beach access, boat launch, and right-of-way. Mr. Williams desire to build a house should not trump everyone else's right to enjoy the beach and coastal dune lake. It certainly shouldn't cut off emergency access and require the County to give up land, just so they can fix a problem he created.
