Destruction of Eastern Lake

New posts
The salinity level does vary as the lakes get salt water from the ocean, storms etc. Depending on the tides, you get salt water going into the lake or freshwater going into the ocean.

I can't speak for the other lakes, but it seems to me that the tides shouldn't flow into Eastern Lake. If I recall correctly, the lake is about 3 feet above sea level. That should be enough to preclude tidal inflow.

Where do I get this bumper sticker - I will do anything possible to see this guy - Brannon - is completely run out of town!!! I will even pay for his moving to as far away as Maine!!!

I hate what's happening to Eastern Lake (and several of Scott's other decisions), but I strongly dislike hearing people speak of running off folks whose families have lived here for generations. His seat is up for election next year; exercise your duty. But be warned that Freeport, where he is from, likes him.

It's because his family has lived here for generations that I find his actions so disappointing. One would think (naive, I know) that of all people he would want to perserve more of our wonderful area, not exploit it. It is sad, and of course he is not alone. When it comes to development, the Growth Management Act may as well not have been written as far as our local government is concerned.

It is sad.:(

As mentioned, Brannon is from Freeport, not SoWal. Those guys north of the Bay don't really care about anything in SoWal, except for the tax revenue SoWal provides to the entire county. Property taxes in SoWal account for much more than 50% of the tax base for Walton County, even though the property being taxed in SoWal is less than 15% of the total land in WalCo. Tax revenue generated from SoWal is used County Wide, including the multi-million dollar horse area under construction around Defuniak Springs.

I don't think anyone really wants to run him off, to Maine or anywhere else. I was just venting frustration about his many of his votes, the fact that he seems to side with developers and their ilk over and over, and his unwillingness to take responsibility for his decisions in correspondence with concerned residents. After reading his biography on the county website, I came to the conclusion that he has his eye on a career in politics and the commission is merely his first stop (he is very young, has a degree in political science and has worked as an aide in Tallahassee). I fear that he looks to developers to fund future campaigns and that it will be difficult to get him to ever side against them.

While it's wonderful that his family is old Walton County, they invited development and other people live here now. People moved here and now have a vested interest in the environment, upholding existing zoning rules, and fighting density and overdevelopment. Their quality of life and the long term values of their investments depend on these things. Mr. Brannon's district encompasses the eastern portion of SoWal, and he needs to realize that he represents them, too.

While many of us seem to be of a like mind on these issues, I just don't see evidence that any of us get involved in visible ways. That's why I suggested the bumper sticker.
