What is the best way to get rid of Japanese Beetles? An insecticide or a trap? They are just starting to get to my rose of sharon.

There is some sort of bag that you can buy and the beetles flock to the bag. They say the bag fills up quickly - you pitch the bag and then put up another one. I have not used one, but the beetles are bad around here this year and several people I know are using them.

The Louisville winter of '94 (minus 22 degrees and 26" of snow) killed our peach trees, then I yanked out about 50 rose bushes- and we didn't have a problem after that. The beetles never bothered the rose of sharons- and I had lots of them.:idontno: But once we got rid of their fave food (the roses and peaches), we were beetle-free!

I may look for these! Although I don't like the idea of changing a bag of beetles. Ick.

I only have fairy roses and no peach trees! I am so not a gardener. My butterfly bush did not come back this year. Well it started to and then all the sudden the leaves curled up and died like some chemical got on them or something. You all know how I loved my butterflies. I will replace it but now is probably not a good time.

I usually deport them back to Japan.

I did have a problem with them one year and I sprayed with soapy water several times. That kills them. I do know people have used those yellow banana bags with success, but I didn't want to attract more, so I tried washing their mouth out with soap first.

:lolabove: I was just reading this..http://thefuntimesguide.com/2005/07/bagabugbeetles.php

and it kind of creeps me out. It says you attract them from all over and the bag could be full in 5 hours:yikes: Double icky.

Wait til you get a whiff of that bag of dead beetles!! :yikes: :yikes:

I wouldn't use these types of traps since beetles will come from all over to congregate and die in the bag. Inevitably many of these little bastards will not make it to the bag and end up covering all your prized vegetation. I can thank my former neighbor for that little bit of knowledge. :pissed:

Hysterical.........:funn:

Banana Bag is a powerful sexual attractant to both the male and the female beetles. By the looks of all the Japanese Beetles A) swarming around the one trap we have in the backyard and B) flying in droves from the nearby yards and over our fence to get to this trap, it's like they're saying, "Hey, I heard the sex is REALLY good over here in THIS yard... follow me!"

Mine died also as well as my SIL's in Ohio & friend in New Hampshire. I asked someone at the garden center about it and she said it was because of the 80 degree weather we had in April followed by the few days of snow. I miss it!
