Dunes and beach walkovers at Watersound

It was a fabulous day for bicycling, so I did a complete tour of Watersound (all three parts) and Watersound West.

It sure is nice how St. Joe has kept the construction well back from the dunes. It's almost like going to Deer Lake or Topsail state parks when you walk out their boardwalks to the beach.

The lake (the real one, not the manmade one) at West is great. So peaceful.

It is very nice  but they didn't do it out of the goodness of their hearts. The dune preservation is the result of a deal with Fish & Wildlife. In exchange for impacting beach mouse habitat at WaterColor, they agreed to keep those dunes intact and to move beach mice there from Topsail. It's all in the documents relating to their "take" permit for WaterColor.

At least they agreed to the deal. Contrast that with some of the other developments on 30A.

OK, I'll bite. How in the world do you move beach mice from Watersound to to Topsail?

I'll keep my eye open for the tiny bus on 30A.

they don't travel 30 -a silly

Love Hop's bus! :funn:

Actually they just trapped a few at Topsail, where they have been doing well, and loaded them into one of those little plastic boxes kids use to take their hamsters to school for show and tell. St Joe has, or used to have anyway, haven't seen him lately, a staff biologist to monitor the mice. I really do like that dune field at WaterSound. Wish we had more like it.

At least some of them are still at Watersound, 'cause I could see mouse tracks from the boardwalk to the beach. There were also a few fox or coyote tracks. I couldn't tell which because they were a couple of days old and partially filled in from the wind.
