Move the war to Afghanistan

Remember when Obama wanted to bring the troops home ? Now he wants to move them, is war that popular with voters ? Does he want to look tough ? Why ? What do y'all think?

I think he has been hinting at this ever since he began getting the briefings from the higher-ups. It has been said by many intelligent people that Obama would likely have to change his anti-war stance when he finds out about much of the privileged information. Even Joe Biden mentioned that the US would be tested within six months from Obama taking Office of the President, and "they will find out that he (Obama) has a backbone of steel." I think this also hints to the people that it is highly likely we will be going to war with Afghanistan or Iran in the future.

RoseAnna, that is true, but moving the troops from Iraq to Afghanistan is quite different than bringing the troops home.

SJ, I was more responding to Vote who seemed perplexed by the war in Afghanistan. If I remember correctly Obama has long held the view that the troops were needed in Afghanistan. The place where the hijackers were trained and Bin laden sought refuge.

Obama doesn't want to move the war to Afganistan, he wants to get out of Iraq and focus on ACTUALLY GOING AFTER AL QUEDA AND BIN LADEN!

The idea that NATO hasn't been centered on that single goal over the last seven years is ridiculous. Afghanistan is a very different war from Iraq. We're seeing a resurgence because we can't get to the bad guys in Pakistan. Regardless of who takes over in January, that is going to be a very tricky situation, and I'm glad we have a guy like Patreus taking over to figure it out.

Stating that the troops would be brought home on a definite timetable is what turned me away from Obama in the first place. I wish we didn't have to be over there at all, but to suddenly pull out - worse yet, let the enemy know when you are planning to surrender - would be disastrous.

I believe (can't disclose why I believe) that the pullout from Iraq is already well underway, but it has to be done slowly, and correctly. But, yes, we still need to focus on Afghanistan.

Why is pulling out troops surrendering? To be perfectly frank, if you tell the current Iraqi government that you are pulling out, the "enemy" will know anyway as they're government would probably leak the information to rile up the insurgents and keep us there.

If the war/wars are going to continue and/or more countries are going to be atacked by the USA, I do not think I want Obama to be our leader in that type of situation. In wartime I would pick McCain in peace Obama.
