Prettiest road in the Panhandle is now open again

I recall stretches of that road being lifted and twisted and literally shifted sideways. It should be an interesting trip.

can anyone recommend a good place to stay if we decide get away for a weekend? No high rises...would prefer a condo or cabin-like place. Thanks

I'm gonna go out on a limb here but if I remember correctly, there are pretty much only high rises in Navarre. It's been about 8 years since I've driven thru but it was gearing up to be high rise heaven then. When I've searched for lodging online, again, mostly high rises. Others hopefully will know otherwise tho.

I'm familiar with that area since I've got a couple of friends who live near there and on Pensacola Beach.

There is a long cluster of high-rises just as you cross the bridge; then there is a line of homes and condos of a couple of stories; then a long stretch of nothing (where Holiday Inn used to be); then there is another 2 high-rises and after that homes and townhouses till you get to the entrance of the road to Pensacola.

Problem is, they renourished the beach and Gustov and Ike ate away a good deal of it...and the sand isn't fluffy and white anymore like it used to be pre-renourishiment; now the sand is full of broken bits of shells that's a bit hard on your feet--but the shelling is much better than it ever was:

There is a live webcam of the beach on this site that's attached to the last high-rise on the West end of the beach: Navarre Beach Florida Guide and Forum – Photos and Web Cams

Photos below were taken by the Kenny Wilder, owner for the website:

Here's the large cluster of Condo just over the bridge:

This was taken looking to the west across the sound to the island. The bridge to the island is in the center. The You can see the cluster of condos on the left of this photo and the other 2 high-rises further west on the island.

Thanks for posting this news; I'm glad to hear it's finally open! We will be driving from Orange Beach to SGB next Wednesday morning (3/18) and have always tried to make this beach route between family beach vacations and each time the opening has been delayed by another storm. Does anyone know if there is a toll travelling eastward from Gulf Breeze/Pensacola to Navarre?

Goodwitch, there are quite a few houses westward on the Navarre end as you head towards the National Seashore. THey are on the beach side and the soundside. Most of the beachside homes appear to have been rebuilt or significantly repaired since the last major hurricanse, and are behind a new artificial berm. If you rent one of these houses, you may want to determine if it has a walkover on-site or nearby.

Yes, there's a $1.00 toll as you enter the island from the Gulf Breeze side--so far, there's no toll if you enter from Navarre side. They were discussing raising the toll to $2, but as far as I know, it's still under consideration.

.

thanks Everytime...looks like a funn weekend jaunt.
