I'm Amanda aka sfbooklady. I live in San Francisco now, but I grew up in New Orleans and spent a lot of time in various locations along the Gulf Coast - Clermont Harbor, Pensacola, Destin.
My family still lives in NO and I would like to be closer to them but... I don't get along very well there. The closest place that I can think of that I could live would be on the FL panhandle. I've gone there a few times recently (with my NO relatives, on vacations) so I know it's nothing like it used to be when I was a kid (like 30 years ago now, I still can't believe I'm that old). I might even have a transferable job.
So I'm curious about, well, everything. What's the cost of living like and how easy is it to find a place to live? There's no way I could afford to buy, I'd have to rent. Is it still as conservative as it used to be? What's the job market like now?
I know there are places that I could get "data" on stuff like that but I trust real people more. So if anyone has a moment to reply that would be great! Thanks!

Welcome Amanda,

I guess everything will seem conservative to you by comparison. The beaches here are in the deep south, but not quite as deep as 15 miles north. I would say the area from Pensacola east to Fort Walton Beach is quite conservative politically, due to the Navy and Air Force Bases, and I have sighted a few folks speaking loudly and holding up bibles on street corners in Pensacola. I had my windows up though. Pensacola was a magnet for abortion protesters and had violent incidents in the recent past. Across the bau bridge, Gulf Breeze is a hotspot of UFO activity and alien visitation. Go figure. I do enjoy that are very much though.

SoWal Beaches has some eclectic folks who live here, but most people will tell you it is conservative overall, but recent years have seen the pendulum move a little more toward the center. If your bare feet are in the sand none of that matters much.

Destin might be your best bet. Compared to SoWal Beaches it is blistering with activity, and will have plenty of affordable rentals. I would guess prices and cost of living here might be lower than SF.

As the Member you may not see the edit if SoWal.com chooses to enable the mask function. What does this mean: You may make a point, have your words changed and to you, the Member, you can't see the edit and are under the illusion that what you have said is still just like you said it.

I've got plenty of proof. The Answer: SoWal.com should tell all Members that SoWal.com reserves the right to change the words it's Members write while putting a masking program up that doesn't let the Member see that their words are not there's anymore.
