OR help for those whose homes or businesses were severely damaged by recent flooding.

Potato, potatoe.

Who knows. I doubt Fugate has had a chance to make changes needed to do just that. But he is a really good guy, knows what he is doing, and has little use for fraud. At least that is what I remember when he helped us with Opal years ago.

People who planned properly for future events shouldn't need any help. Government bailing people out who make bad decisions just propegates bad behavior.

You know, I really find this attitude disturbing. There are many people who plan as well as they can and still need some help. A little empathy goes a long way toward being a compassionate person and leads to a better society. I have always thought the Golden Rule a good standard by which to live. That may account for the fact that some version of it is found in all the major religions of the world.

30A Shopper, if you have never been in a situation where you needed some compassion and perhaps some help, from someone or some entity, then you are surely fortunate. Not everyone finds themselves in that situation.

I do not find it inappropriate to help those who need it; and if some of my taxes go toward that help, then that is fine with me. I would hope that if I, or my family, were in a situation where we needed some help, that someone with an attitude different from the one you just expressed was available to lend a hand.

In my experience offering a hand of help to another has always been the catalyst for more and more good fortune to come to me.
Our government is not some big bad organization...it is made up of people just like each of us. And, our government reflects the values of our country. Do we really want to be the people who turn our heads away from a person in need and blame the person for not planning well enough? I don't think so.

While I understand your point, literal application of people planning properly for future events would mean that nobody would live or own a business south of 30A.

But these are just poor country folk who built too close to the mighty Choctawhatchee, so it's easy to say what they should have done.

Free money!!!!! Yea!!!!!

Poo-poo on you both! Rapunzel and I were certainly grateful for the (I think around) $3000 emergency cash FEMA gave us following Katrina. Our main sin in poor planning? Daring to have a bank and payroll offices in New Orleans. The government has way more than recouped the loan they gave us. I hope they can help out some of our hardworking, taxpaying locals, too. FEMA is far from perfect, but helping people out who need it is the right thing to do when private charity can't.

Must be nice to be perfect and never need help of any kind.

Since I know sh*t happens even WITH good planning, I am glad that there is assistance available to our friends and neighbors when they really need it.

I think you are making assumptions about my supposed lack of good nature based on your misinterpretation of my attempts at defending my personal rights. Please try and avoid mixing up the two. IMHO, abusing my rights in an effort to provide what you perceive as rights for others accomplishes nothing.

There are many people who plan as well as they can and still need some help.

Do they, or have they simply become dependent on some higher power? (e.g. government?) I’m trying to come up with examples.. for example people who build on a flood plane, or build a house 20 feet below sea level surrounded by levees, or build a house on the beach in SoWal, or build a farm in the middle of the prairie – there’s insurance for all the worst case scenarios. Could you give some examples of people who plan as well as they can and still need some help? There are probably some rare examples but I can’t think of any off hand.

I do not believe in any religion, but I do believe in natural selection. Community is important for survival. But there are bounds to that.

I have, and I championed through. I turned to family, to friends, but most of all I turned to myself. I have never turned to government.

I am not lacking in empathy, nor do I find it inappropriate to help those with less. Trust me, I'm a sucker for somebody in need, or even feigning need. I just prefer these acts to be a personal choice. The Constitution you know, it’s a beautiful thing as long as you respect it. Answer me this, if government forces me to give to charity against my will, what is the net-net accomplishment?

That’s exactly my point, people should have the right to live where ever they want. However people should not be entitled to a free ride if things go wrong. No one has the right to expect someone else to pay for their risky behavior right? If I have unprotected sex every weekend and contract AIDs, should you pay for my treatment? If I like sky diving, should you pay for my hospital bills if my chute fails to open?? (Even if I'm "poor country folk"? :D)

My post was an attempt to draw a line around the subject of ->a right to help from government<-. Personally I ask very little of our government, mainly three things - a national defense to protect my interests, a local police force to keep the streets safe, and a fire department at my beck and call in the rare event something of value catches fire. Looking over my federal and county tax payments, I think I've paid for that support fair and square, and then some. Aside from these things, I am very proud to say I have not asked government for much of anything else during my lifetime. IMHO, this country would be much much much better off if everyone strived much harder to accomplish the same. When did my approach become so heretical, and why?

I have no problem with loans. Even low interest or interest free loans. Loans are not free money.
