First loggerhead turtle nest found

Lori...you are so wonderful to us for sharing all the outdoor info!

Turtles rule!

WOW!!! Sowal truly is the source for infomation first. Thought I'd have heard of the nest by now from Sharon via Email. Time to see what can be done to fill in holes and get the chairs and tents put away at night to leave lots of room for turtles coming ashore.

Only turtle I saw lately was an attempt at a necropsy on one that washed up in the Retreat. We think that one was a Leatherback.

Don't forget to pick up the Turtle Safe flashlight covers at Raw & Juicy! AZalace was telling me about the Sea Turtle Awareness tour last month- Juno Beach, FL practices safe turtle guidelines with buildings and lighting, and had 1000 sea turtle nests last year. He said everyone who lives and visits there seems to participate in protecting the turtles.

I went to the websites and it talks about all the volunteers that are doing the sea turtle monitoring. But the county just paid some group $10K for sea turtle monitoring. Can anyone enlighten me?

The TDC pays for the turtle monitoring as they are required to by permit for the western Walton County Beach Nourishment Project and the ongoing beach maintenance efforts. All counties who perform beach restoration/nourishment are required to pay someone to monitor the beach and it cannot be done by the permitee.

The South Walton Turtle Watch Group is the only permit holder for Walton County and thus have the sole source contract. The contract is for $80,000 per year.

It's a bit early in the season for the nesting to begin. I wonder if we should expect strange weather this year.
Not really - just one day later than the first nest last year.
Season starts May 1, but here in the panhandle it is usually mid or late May.

But if you ask me, the weather has already been weird this year.

Fabulous news! Turtle nest means no storms....i.e. hurricanes!

Wahoo~~~~~~
