First loggerhead turtle nest found

Don't forget to pick up the Turtle Safe flashlight covers at Raw & Juicy! AZalace was telling me about the Sea Turtle Awareness tour last month- Juno Beach, FL practices safe turtle guidelines with buildings and lighting, and had 1000 sea turtle nests last year. He said everyone who lives and visits there seems to participate in protecting the turtles.

You can also let your eyes adjust to the ambient light. Not only does it work, but it doesn't require batteries. ;-)

WOW!!! Sowal truly is the source for infomation first. Thought I'd have heard of the nest by now from Sharon via Email. Time to see what can be done to fill in holes and get the chairs and tents put away at night to leave lots of room for turtles coming ashore.

Only turtle I saw lately was an attempt at a necropsy on one that washed up in the Retreat. We think that one was a Leatherback.

Well, I have a confession. I actually posted the info on WaltonOutdoors.com 30 minutes before I posted on SoWal!

Fabulous news! Turtle nest means no storms....i.e. hurricanes!
:scratch:Well, I wish I could make this true. But we have had nests every year since the South Walton Turtle Watch began surveys in 1995. Some years, many of the nests were washed out by storms, going all the way back to Erin and Opal and continuing on through Dennis, and all the others in between. Sorry Lynnie but it just doesn't correlate.

We lost nests last year to the tropical storms that came through.

Turtle season start is driven by ocean temperatures that somehow triggers the need for turtles to nest. The magic number is about 80 degrees.
