Small time, working for smallish companies or consulting on local area networks through more national firms. The big employers are the military or the military contractors. To the east it's Panama City and Tyndal, and farther east there's always Tallahassee. To the west it's Hurlburt / Eglin in Ft. Walton. TYBRIN is probably the biggest private employer, they are in Valparaiso and serve up for all the military bases.
From what I've heard, down here you're looking at around 50K a year with solid experience. A military clearence is a must (or the ability to pass the checks needed to get one). Heavy unix, network admin. and some windows network type stuff. Programming is a lot of Java, Unix, some windows and a lot of visualization type stuff with OpenGL. Certifications are also big hits with the military crowd.
emeraldcoast.com has a pretty solid list of openings.
