Poll: Majority of Republicans Believe ACORN Stole the Presidential Election
Katie Connolly

As his hopes of winning the congressional election in New York's 23rd district fade, conservative candidate Doug Hoffman is clearly getting desperate. Today he's blaming his loss on "ACORN, the unions, and the Democratic party" who he alleges, without a shred of evidence, tampered with votes to rig the election against him. Never mind that ACORN told David Weigel that they didn't have volunteers in the area, or that it largely operates in poor urban communities, which NY-23 is not. For conservatives, ACORN is shorthand for the evils of the left.

On the heels of that news, Public Policy Polling released this shocking nugget on its blog: "a 52% majority of GOP voters nationally think that ACORN stole the Presidential election for Barack Obama last year, with only 27% granting that he won it legitimately." Say what? More than half of Republican respondents believe the president was elected fraudulently! That's a stunningly high number. It's disturbing, not only as a demonstrable lack of faith in America's democracy but as an expression of wanton ignorance. Worse, it illustrates the effectiveness of Glenn Beck, Rush Limbaugh, et al., alongside a well-funded "Stop ACORN" campaign, in creating an atmosphere where unquestioned lies become received wisdom....it is no wonder why i am registering "no party affiliation"...wow!!

I seem to remember many saying Bush stole 'two' elections. I wonder if you were as outraged at that 'wanton ignorance' and suggested then a lack of faith in our democracy because of the ignorance, bitter comments there?

I think Obama was elected because he had more electorial votes. I think no matter who gets elected they will have problems with segments of our society. They will piss off someone. If, as a politician, you want to make any real change, you will step on toes. If you step on toes and shift the way things are done, it will affect corporations, people and jobs. Money from those affected systems will be put in the system, media etc. for that politician to be bashed.

From the bottom up is how things need to be changed. But even from the bottom, on most issues, a divide exists. So it will have to be on clear cut things where changes are made.

Btw, you mentioned Glen Beck. I've seen a few good shows on Beck lately. I find he has a good research team. He is obviously biased toward conservative principals, that is true. But he has done some interesting journalistic investigtions, I think.

Regarding Obama, I actually think he could be a good front man if he had conservatives representing in the Congress and Senate. Not Republicans, mind you, but Conservatives. Heck, Blue Dog Democrates. Whatever. That would be sweet, I think. I'll bet he'd do a good job then, though.

Kind of like a good coach that has a good staff. Let the assistant coaches shape the offense and defense and let the head coach serve as the guy walking the sidelines and overseeing everything.

But...

No they dont...

The DEMS want you and the masses to think that...

The majority of repubs think we had a crappy candidate that ran a crappy campaign.....

I love conspiracy theories......and, hey, maybe a "new" banner for the next stupid teabagging event.

i seem to remember the 1st bush election was close, second not close, and obama's election was not close. if memory serves me right, the florida supreme court sided with gore's request for a manual recount, and the u.s. supreme court gave the bush the victory. are you saying the 52 percent figure is reasonable in your mind?

IMO if that many Republicans do believe that, it pretty effectively shows what is wrong with our country.

You can't lose, and if you do, you have no personal responsibilty for those results, it was a conspiracy or fraud.

And god forbid you move on and try harder the next time or learn from your mistakes.

I am starting to think that Palin's popularity is based on Republicans so eager to find a candidate who isn't an old rich white man that they don't care about anything else.
