Google Fiber for Communities: Think big with a gig

Google is planning to launch an experiment that we hope will make Internet access better and faster for everyone. We plan to test ultra-high speed broadband networks in one or more trial locations across the country. Our networks will deliver Internet speeds more than 100 times faster than what most Americans have access to today, over 1 gigabit per second, fiber-to-the-home connections. We'll offer service at a competitive price to at least 50,000 and potentially up to 500,000 people.
From now until March 26th, we're asking interested municipalities to provide us with information about their communities through a Request for information (RFI), which we'll use to determine where to build our network.

University of Florida News - Your online vote could help bring ultra-high-speed broadband to Gainesville

GAINESVILLE, Fla. ? You can help assure Gainesville?s selection as a trial community for Google?s ultra-high speed broadband network ? a network that would increase speed of the average user?s Internet access more than 100 times ? with one gigabit per second connections.
Google will choose a few communities throughout the nation to participate in this project. The City of Gainesville has been joined by representatives from University of Florida, Santa Fe College, the Gainesville Area Chamber of Commerce and others, to create the winning application package for this project.

Go for it, Kurt. Afterall, SoWal is a municipality, isn't it?

I know of another community that is shooting for it also. They are not in FL but are in NC

Sowal isn't a municipality, Walton County would be. That's a lot of land to cover.

Curious if this upgrade includes the Fiber optic network cards for the computers we've got. Otherwise you wouldn't notice a difference. In addition if you have multiple computers you'll need a gigabit router and hold on to your pants.

It's google magic.

I would think at a minimum, free public WiFi for SoWal Beaches would be very beneficial to local businesses - especially rentals.

:ninja:

Keep in mind that wireless doesn't have the current capability to reach fiber optic speeds.

Sowal's more than a municipality. Right, kurt?
