Death in Sowal

New posts
Not sure why you seem to accuse the Sheriff's Dept of wrong doing.

From the first story you linked: "It listed a preliminary cause of death as self-inflicted asphyxiation but was awaiting official results of an autopsy conducted Monday."

I found nowhere in the story, reports that the prisoner died because the substation isn't manned. It did say that the man is accused of choking his wife to the point where she couldn't breathe, after he got drunk and mad because she attended church.

The second person most likely died from drowning, not dead batteries. While AEDs can help revive people, the chances are almost nominal, much like CPR. If you don't administer it almost immediately, the chances of recovery go down exponentially as time passes.

I think it is a far cry to insinuate that the Sheriff's office is to blame for either of these two unfortunate deaths, from reading these news stories.

I agree with you, Murray. These people need to get their facts straight before they make such accusations.

Two deaths in Sowal, one because the Sheriff's substation is no longer manned and one because someone can't buy batteries. Wonder what Brannon thinks about this?

If there is a point you are trying to make then you need to spell it out instead of posting a couple of links and making an ambiguous statement.

I really was not trying to "make a point" but was attempting to stimulate discussion. Our commissioner seems to place great stock in the Sheriff's Dept so I wondered what the response would be to these items. If my original post came off as accusatory I apologize.

The man was obviously disturbed and apparently belonged in jail. But did he deserve the death penalty? It is common knowledge that the Substation is no longer manned. Did that contribute to this man's death? From the news report he was arrested at 4pm and found dead after 7pm. Is it acceptable to lock someone up unattended for 3 hours? From the comments on the NWFDN website the cameras in the substation are no longer functioning. Why has this equipment not been maintained? While many of these questions will be answered by FDLE, what immediate steps have been taken to prevent another occurance?

As to the drowning death, no one knows if the AED would have saved him or not. The health professionals on the scene apparently thought it was worth a try or they would not have requested the equipment. The reason no one will ever know is because the Sheriff's Dept had not kept up equipment that we the taxpayers have purchased. Is this acceptable? If not what steps have been taken to correct the problem?

IMHO the Sheriff's Dept. is better today than under ole ralphie. But does that make them immune from answering questions about incidents where two people lost their lives? I just would like to hear answers to reasonable questions.

Perhaps you haven't heard about this thing called "jail", where they lock away people, unattended for periods longer than 3 hours. The news story stated that he was held in a holding cell in Santa Rosa Beach, and that it appears that he killed himself.

AEDs are last ditch attempt to save lives but unless administered almost immediately, there success rates are dismal, as is CPR. There are many stats to show that.

If you are truly attempting to find answers, it seems that you would ask the Sheriff. Sounds like from your post that you are just trying to stir puddin'.

Ya can't make chicken salad if you don't break some eggs.;-) If you think you will get a straight answer from the county with lawsuits possible you are living in a better place than the rest of us.
I still think the questions asked are reasonable.
As far as AED's your response led me to google and I found that only 5% of victims of sudden cardiac arrest survive but the survival rate goes up to 75% if an AED is used within 3 minutes of the attack. That is a pretty significant improvement. While the current sheriff apparently did not buy the Department's AED's ( SWFD did) if they are not going to use them and keep them up they should sell them.

Why not just lay the blame on SWFD for purchasing the AED and not maintaining or providing training maintenance?

Was there a contract in place for SWFD to maintain the units and train the operators? If this is the case then the "blame" clearly falls on them. Is this the case?
Thanks for adding another reasonable question to the discussion.

That I don't know.
