Beach Comber
Lots of activity on south end of eastern lake. Looks like they have put a sand barrier with pipes in. They did drain they southern most tip of the lake yesterday. Any info from anyone?

I saw an article in the Beach Breeze that said they were going to put drainage pipes in the protective berms for the lakes. If constructed correctly, this seems like a smart way to control the lake levels, and still keep a barrier that would hopefully stop any "product" from entering the lakes. I hope someone is watching the level that they installed the pipes at Eastern Lake, because they seem mighty low in my opinion.

Could this explain the nastiest water I have ever seen on the beach since coming down here? What a dissappointment this vacation has been. Destin looks beautiful. Even PCB looks clean and blue. Right here at Watersound it looks like a brown lagoon. What is the freaking deal?

This is the natural color of the lake water in our area. It is a substance called tannin that leaches out of the roots of indigenous plants in this region. The water is clean, it's just stained. It mixes with the emerald waters only when the lakes periodically break out.

From listening to the Sheriff talk about this, Lakeview explains it well. Rather than removing the man-made sand barriers when the lakes get full from heavy rain, the engineer firm recommended installing the pipes and pump to pump the overflow into the Gulf, without compromising the lakes from the oil. This technique will not only be more effective, it will also be less expensive.

foxfamily, the lakes would naturally be overflowing into the Gulf with all of this rain, so don't blame it on anyone other than mother nature. It does make for darker, not-as-fun water and play, but it is completely natural for the tannic waters from the lakes to overflow into the Gulf. The only unnatural part of this for the time being is the lack of exchange of Gulf water, re-entering the lakes, which I explain above. You are at the beach. Relax.
