Further, does no one not have a problem with the opening day being 9/11? As I said earlier, if peaceful relations are the ultimate goal, I do not take issue with the Center/Mosque, but leave 9/11 as a day for those to mourn or do their community service. This is obviously a charged topic and why add to the angst, which I feel the Center is doing.
1) They haven't even started construction or raised all the money needed for the project, so I am not too concerned that the opening date is fixed in stone.
2) I can see why some might dislike the chosen date, but I do not think we properly honor those whose lives were lost with negative actions. Opening a community center on that day to bring people together and dedicating a new building as part of the plan to rebuild that part of the city is a positive thing IMO. Various other memorials and events are scheduled for that day as well.
3) I like to say "f you" to the Taliban. Nut jobs fly planes into buildings to kill innocent people using Islam as their justification. Ten years later we open a new taller building nearby to promote goodwill between Christians, Muslims, and to bolster the neighborhood tax base and infrastructure.
