Attack of School Board Members Pay

New posts
I've never understood the sky high salaries that 'second tier' elected officials draw down here. I grew up in a city about the size of Okasloosa County. The mayor there made about $20K a year; city council was about half that. School board was $100-$200 per meeting. And, save for the odd bonehead move by the school board, things generally worked well and there never seemed to be a problem finding a long list of qualified people to run for office. Corruption among that group was very rare. And this is in a bluest of blue states commonly ragged on for generous public spending.

And then I get down here and the people doing the same job for the same size population group are making $50K a year plus probably getting to use a gub'mint car. And with those generous salaries for those kinds of elected positions, you get scandal after scandal about misuse of funds. Maybe there's something to be said for setting up a system so that people are serving out of their sense of civic duty, and not out of a desire to line their pockets.

I believe that elected officials should be compensated, I just question when legislators decide which elected officials will and won't be compensated. I believe Idlewind said it best, and we don't agree on much, this should be addressed at the local level.

Why would anyone in their right mind take the abuse and the public scrutiny that comes with public office without being compensated. I swear, the politicians in Tally are making this alot harder than it has to be.
