What is the Tea Party?

New posts
IMHO, the petition links page needs to go Andy, there's stuff there that has NOTHING to do with the Tea Party. It's just a bunch of evangelicals pushing their social conservative agenda which, IMHO, is anti-equality and hence, very Un-American.

That's the surreal nightmare I was referring to. What the hell is fatima and why do I need it?

Gidget, I don't know anymore ways to say it. The Tea Party movement (and movement is the key word) has many principles and values. As with anything political, you pick and choose what you support and believe in and ignore the rest. No one party or movement has all the answers and some have none at all, though they are few. All the answers and suggestions by the Tea Party are not sacrosanct but they are certainly better than than many of the Republican's and practically all of the Democrat's, IMO. If the liberal group here insists on taking what they see as unacceptable about the Tea Party tenets, then fine, that is their perogative. But they show their own intolerance when they insinuate that those principles they disagree with are the only principles or values expressed by Tea Party members and that all Tea Party members support all the Tea Party tenets to the Nth degree. I hope I've made myself clear because some here, it seems, find it impossible to use common sense in their evaluation of this movement as you have done.

Andy, you seem to be saying that folks who disapprove of those intolerant tenets of the tea party lack common sense for airing their disapproval.

Andy might not say it but I will, anyone who thinks this country is headed in the right direction, that 14 trillion dollars in debt is OK, that running annual deficits in excess of 1 trillion dollars is acceptable and having all the power in this country concentrated in Washington is OK lacks common sense. To paraphrase Goldwater; Intolerance in the defense of fiscal sanity is no vice and tolerance of spending taxpayer money is no virtue.

This trend probably won't last, but over the short term it's good to see.

I get a little frustrated (Gidget mentioned something about this) when I hear social conservatives like Bachmann claim they are leaders of the Tea Party - a movement that I believe has it's roots in libertarianism. Marriage amendments and intelligent design are not libertarian views - libertarians believe the federal government should not be involved in education and marriage. On the flip side getting out of Afghanistan and avoiding conflict in Libya are libertarian views. So with candidates like Bachmann it's a mixed bag.

Well if I were a Tea Party member, and I am not, I would be a little frustrated by the hijacking of it. I think its basic tenets have gotten off track, much like the R's, D's. When you have Ralph Reed who has his own agenda, seeming to say he is willing to negotiate that agenda to get a conservative (Republican) in office when that guy or gal may be a little left leaning on the subject then truly show what we have here is politics at any and all cost. So in my view, the Tea Party is not much different than any other special interest and will add or cast aside tenets to make itself for palatable to those who will support it. Welcome to the special interest section. The opinions expressed here are mine and no one elses, I asked the question in the beginning and watched as this forum developed and opinions were expressed on both sides. The Tea Party is what I thought it was, Thanks

Idlewind, I agree with you and I believe all those folks Andy has accused of lacking common sense agree with you as well.

Where we disagree is what to do about it. Your team nicely articulates the problems but then proposes as a solution more of the same of what helped cause it.

Geo, please re-read my post. I did not say anyone lacked common sense, I said they found it impossible to use it in their evaluation of what had been posted about the Tea Party movement. BTW, I knew exactly what BW was looking for when he created this thread. Yes, I agree, that to some degree the Tea Party has been hijacked. Still, much of what they believe in and support, hold true.
