What is the Tea Party?

The press was writing about the Tea Party long before Obama became a presidential contender. The original use of the term was coined at a Ron Paul rally in Boston on December 16th 2007 to commemorate the Boston Tea Party of 1776.

Now I get it, you want it to be all about race so you can easily discount the whole movement. But you're wrong it's not.

No, the original use of the term was coined sometime around Dec. 16, 1773 by The Sons of Liberty, a group of Patriots that were artists, craftsmen, professionals and tradesmen who organized a group to defend their rights. Led by Samuel Adams, members included Paul Revere, John Hancock, Benedict Arnold, Patrick Henry and John Adams. Ron Paul was not trying to start a poltical party at the time, just pulling a publicity stunt.

If it looks like a duck, walks like a duck and quacks like a duck...............
Now, please identify the "crazies" to which you refer.

What about Libya, Kosovo, Vietnam, and Korea?

Out of these four, I believe Libya is the only "unfunded" war. Taxes were raised in all other US wars since the war of 1812. But, much more important to this discussion is: did the Republican adminstration raise taxes to fund the War in Iraq (our costliest war) or the War in Afghanistan (our longest war)? No, they didn't. THEY BORROWED THE MONEY. So, keep telling me about how tax cuts help our deficit...

Did Obama raise taxes when he escalated the war in Afghanistan? No he didn't.. and guess what, he also increased spending and implemented tax cuts about the same time.

In Idlewind's original post she/he criticized Bush, republicans, and democrats on the wars and spending. Now lets see if you can stand up and do the same.

Write this down, tax cuts result in increased government revenue. Three quotes for you:

1.

"It is a paradoxical truth that tax rates are too high and tax revenues are too low and the soundest way to raise the revenues in the long run is to cut the rates now ... Cutting taxes now is not to incur a budget deficit, but to achieve the more prosperous, expanding economy which can bring a budget surplus." – John F. Kennedy, Nov. 20, 1962, president's news conference
2.

"Lower rates of taxation will stimulate economic activity and so raise the levels of personal and corporate income as to yield within a few years an increased – not a reduced – flow of revenues to the federal government." – John F. Kennedy, Jan. 17, 1963, annual budget message to the Congress, fiscal year 1964
3.

"A tax cut means higher family income and higher business profits and a balanced federal budget. Every taxpayer and his family will have more money left over after taxes for a new car, a new home, new conveniences, education and investment. Every businessman can keep a higher percentage of his profits in his cash register or put it to work expanding or improving his business, and as the national income grows, the federal government will ultimately end up with more revenues." – John F. Kennedy, Sept. 18, 1963, radio and television address to the nation on tax-reduction bill

I don't mean to be blasphemous, but Kennedy could have been wrong. Quoting JFK (a three year president) is kinda a red herring anyway. Nonetheless, taxes were raised to pay for the Vietnam War, The Korean War, The First Gulf War, World War II, World War I, the Spanish-American War, The War of 1812...(all of which don't add up to the trillions spent on Iraq/Afghan)....are you getting the point? As to Shopper's comment on Obama allowing Bush Tax Cuts to extend past their ordered demise, I believe this was a major mistake on his part, but he felt it was necessary to try to stimulate an economy that had gone code blue during the last Republican administration.

Write this down. Just cutting taxes is not what raises revenue, it's what taxes you cut and the Bush tax cuts did not work and are not working!

IMO the fiscal agendas of the Tea Party are universal, but the social agenda is Republican.

Really wish the Social agenda could not have happened so that the Tea Party COULD achieve greatness as a major 3rd party and bring some much needed non-partisan finance discussion to debates, the ballot, and the capitals.

THANK YOU! This is why I made my post about the radical homophobic quotes by the person who gave the Tea Party response to Obama's speech. Why didn't they pick someone with less of a social agenda and more in tune with say Andy and 30Ashopper's views? That was my point. I am NOT some dyed in the wool liberal nut lol - I just can't abide such hateful talk (like that coming from Bachmann) and wish, like you scooterbug, that the GOP hadn't hijacked the social agenda part of the Tea Party. I'd take it back lol and REMOVE any references to gay bashing.

You might want to check your facts before you make pronouncements:
Federal Revenue 2000-2008:
Year/GDP-US/ Total Direct Revenue-FED
2000 9951.5 2025.19 2001 10286.2 1991.08 2002 10642.3 1853.14 2003 11142.1 1782.31 2004 11867.8 1880.11 2005 12638.4 2153.61 2006 13398.9 2406.87 2007 14077.6 2567.98 2008 14441.4 2523.99

It is plain to see that the revenues of the federal government increased 27% in spite of (or because of) the tax cuts. Another red herring of the left is that rich people paid less taxes than before. As the Wall Street Journal notes:" taxes paid by millionaire households more than doubled from $136 billion in 2003 to $274 billion in 2006 because of the JGTRRA."

The problem with Bush was not a revenue problem but a spending problem. Federal spending increased from 3240.18 trillion in 2000 to 5335.24 in 2008, an increase of 65%.
The tax cuts worked as they always do. The problem was Bush spent money like a drunk sailor.
