Our boy, Max, is a bonafide AKC champion. Mrs. Singinchicken used to show him. He's enjoying his retirement, now, and we only do shows every now and then. We got into it as a way of socializing him due to his size, and all of a sudden he started winning like crazy. Handlers keep the bait in their mouths to keep their hands free. It's usually just hotdog. They were really icky shoes because they have no class or taste. It's not a very high brow sport or event. Best in Show is spot on! Here's a shot of our boy when he became a champ...

DD...if you have any questions, PM me...

He's beautiful. I can understand why you chose to show him. I will let you know when I think of my other questions. I was pretty blown away by the whole process.

Sounds like for a lot of people it is too much of a "business" at their dog's expense. I guess they don't want the dog to become too much of a pet because then it might not show as well??

Yeah. I guess I sort of expected that they would adore their dogs, but I think you might be right, Rita.

Pepper's breeder loves her dogs. They stay in her home and sleep inside, not crated up. Of course, even with Pepper, when I'm at work or leave for several hours, I crate her up. She feels safer there and goes into her crate willingly even before we say "load up" (now she's learned "l-u"). I go barefoot all of the time, so when she sees me put on shoes, I don't even have to say l-u. LOL.

I will have to say that Pepper's breeder has avoided me ever since Pepper got toe cancer in 2008. That's the business side. She also hasn't returned my emails about Pepper's recent illness. Tests were normal -- Pepper has an ear infection that probably caused the dizziness. But the breeder adores her dogs. I've met them, I've had some of them at Lauren's apartment near Georgia Tech, and you can just tell that they are accustomed to being in a home environment and know how to behave. They behave like little princes and princesses.

Other breeders have so many dogs that those dogs do stay in their kennels, especially if the breeder has another job. And you take a group of standard poodles playing roughly -- it's crazy. One of my breeder acquantainces had her fibia broken from poodles running around playing roughly.

So it really depends on the breeder.
