Caught from PCB beach 9'+

A rare Great White Shark sighting on the Gulf Coast, this one actually caught in the surf near Panama City Beach.

According to the Dark Side Sharkers fishing club, Derrick Keeny caught this 9' 8 1/2" Great White Sunday, March 1st.

They snapped a few pictures, tagged and released the shark.

We found these images on Facebook.

It's pretty unusual to see this species in the northern Gulf of Mexico, especially so close to shore.

You can follow the Dark Side Sharkers on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram @DSSharkers.

Also, not to mention the locals who swim in the gulf.

A bunch of us were chased out of the water by a bull shark once on Grayton Beach. I don't swim in the Gulf anymore. I'm completely cured of that activity. Love looking at it though.

I don't like being way out on a hot august day, floating leisurely with friends.. And seeing a bunch of people on shore waving you in and doing the shark thing on their heads, pointing. No thanks!!! But... after we made it safely to shore we headed to the Red Bar for double margaritas. So it was scary and fun. We spent the rest of the day lazing around in the western Lake pass. Safe from sharks but not from crabs.

To be fair, that shark was a big one, he was right behind us.. But he wasn't interested in us. He didn't do a thing but swim by.

Oh I remember that day! The day I learned that a child's sand bucket will carry 3 margaritas snugly without spillage! Whew!!!

You have greater risk losing your life in a car any day around here than you do as a result of a shark. Keep it in perspective. It is their environment not ours

Obviously your job doesn't depend on tourist industry.

And yours does?

I love tourists and make a fair living off of them by providing services. It is the "tourons", those who trash our beaches, don't know how to drive and stumble around drunk that I don't care for.

Oh, you mean like us Sowalers when we go on vacation.
