PCB is a messed up place. Pretty sure the mayor
And many of the council and the city are just one SAD disaster away from a heck of a law suit.

Steel1man, a little explaination please. How are they about to be sued?

I would assume( you know what means!) that if my child was harmed ( loss of life) on the beach and the Mayor and her group had ignored the Sheriff's request Last year 2014,that the beach was out of control. Then this year she is on file saying she feels the beach is safe and continues her " everything is safe and fine", approach....pretty sure some Grade A law firm could at least scare them to turn down PC Spring Break...IMO.....

People die every single year in PCB during spring break. Very sad. If you ask me, PCB has been out of control for many years. Yes, it only escalates. I do think there is a whole new level of criminal activity going on: shootings, more drugs, sexual assault, and people of all ages coming from 100 miles around (or more) to target the college age kids with drugs, etc. Underage drinking is the least of it.

No, this isn't a PCB forum but we do cover PCB often because it's our neighbor, we shop and eat there often, we attend events and concerts there, and we love St Andrews State Park, Shell Island and getting out on the water with Captain Greg of Osprey Charters. We cover Destin activities as well. South Walton locals and visitors often travel in either direction.

Be it spring break or a church retreat anytime you have over 500,000 people gathered I would have to believe a few deaths would not be a statistical oddity. I was stationed on a ship with a complement of 65 and we had two accidental deaths within a few months of each other. Young people partying and drinking will up the odds of accidental deaths, but life is a risk and stupidity is one of the many ways nature thins the herd. We have tourist drownings every year and no one is suggesting we shut down the beaches for the Summer.

But..., we have created a flag warning system and we do in-fact make it illegal to enter the water under double-red flags. So, while the beach is not "shut down" entering the water has been at times.

A significant amount of funding is used to try to educate the "herd" as you refer to them.

While I can understand your Social Darwinism comparison, I do not feel it fair to compare someone who drowns in the Gulf to an Idiot on Spring Break.

There are also laws concerning alcohol sales and people drown no matter what color of flag is flying. True accidents do happen to both swimmers and partiers, but an idiot is an idiot. It makes no difference if they drown because they under estimated their skill at swimming or they fall off a balcony because they over estimated their skill while drunk they're still dead.

Really, I have seen mature responsible adults lament that the kind of money they spend to vacation here that double red flags aren't going to stop them from swimming. I have had adults with children walk around first responders while providing CPR on an middle aged person who drowned so that they can enjoy the crashing waves. I have seen the effects on married middle aged vacationers who who decide to drink and drive and fall out a golf cart. Yeah may be not to the crowd extent of what is occurring on PCB but I have seen what I would have expected reasonable adults act like spring breakers. As for what is occurring on PCB and Sowal is it an upgrade in enforcement because of the issues and concerns of last year, just because numbers are up is it really because things are worse or the laws are being more strictly enforced?
