Petition To Protect Soldier Monuments

New posts
It is beyond my comprehension why some cannot understand that the memorial to fallen Confederate "kid" soldiers has nothing to do with racism, the reasons for our civil war, what was said by both sides at the time or any other number of things regarding the history surrounding the civil war. It only has to do with honoring those, who when called on, whether they believed in the cause or not, fullfilled their duty as they saw it, and gave their all. It is not about "abject evil", who was right and who was wrong, whether the South was goaded into beginning the war, it is about individuals who gave their lives.

Yes Andy that is exactly the points I am trying to make. You just have a better ability of expression. All soldiers should be honored. A higher power will sort out the evil.

I agree that it is beyond your comprehension that you don't honor traitors.

You don't know what you're talking about. If you did you would know that historically Presidents of the US have sent a wreath to Arlington National Cemetery to honor the Confederate war dead, dating back to Woodrow Wilson.

I think I have been clear. The Confederacy and the Confederate Soldiers did not represent "abject evil". The Confederate Soldiers should be honored. The War could have been prevented. The question about right and wrong will always be answered in the perspective of the individual unless you are God himself.

I asked you a direct question: Do you think the founders of the Confederacy were right or wrong?

Civil War Unknown Monument

Near Arlington House, in what was once part of its famous rose garden, stands a monument dedicated to the unknown soldiers who died in the Civil War. The monument, dedicated in September 1866, stands atop a masonry vault containing the remains of 2,111 soldiers gathered from the fields of Bull Run and the route to the Rappahannock. The remains were found scattered across the battlefields or in trenches and brought here. This monument was the first memorial at Arlington to be dedicated to soldiers who had died in battle, and who later could not be identified. Because in some instances only a few bones or a skull were recovered, it is assumed that the vault contains the remains of Confederate soldiers as well as Union troops.

Quartermaster General Montgomery Meigs ordered that these bodies be gathered and buried on this particular site, knowing that the presence of graves here would prevent the Lee family from inhabiting their house again.

The side of the memorial features this inscription:

BENEATH THIS STONE
REPOSE THE BONES OF TWO THOUSAND ONE HUNDRED AND ELEVEN UNKNOWN SOLDIERS
GATHERED AFTER THE WAR
FROM THE FIELDS OF BULL RUN, AND THE ROUTE TO THE RAPPAHANOCK,
THEIR REMAINS COULD NOT BE IDENTIFIED. BUT THEIR NAMES AND DEATHS ARE
RECORDED IN THE ARCHIVES OF THEIR COUNTRY, AND ITS GRATEFUL CITIZENS
HONOR THEM AS OF THEIR NOBLE ARMY OF MARTYRS. MAY THEY REST IN PEACE.
SEPTEMBER. A. D. 1866.

I asked you a direct question: Do you think the founders of the Confederacy were right or wrong?
No more wrong than Abraham Lincoln. Both were wrong but thought they were right. I have no moral judgements of either. I think that both would have tried harder if they had known what you and I know about the human cost of that war. It was a terrible underestimation by both sides.
