Petition To Protect Soldier Monuments

New posts
No more wrong than Abraham Lincoln. Both were wrong but thought they were right. I have no moral judgements of either. I think that both would have tried harder if they had known what you and I know about thehuman cost of that war. It was a terrible underestimation by both sides.[/QUOT

You have no moral judgement against men who publicly endorse slavery and armed rebellion against the United States. That's rather pathetic.

Civil War Unknown Monument

Near Arlington House, in what was once part of its famous rose garden, stands a monument dedicated to the unknown soldiers who died in the Civil War. The monument, dedicated in September 1866, stands atop a masonry vault containing the remains of 2,111 soldiers gathered from the fields of Bull Run and the route to the Rappahannock. The remains were found scattered across the battlefields or in trenches and brought here. This monument was the first memorial at Arlington to be dedicated to soldiers who had died in battle, and who later could not be identified. Because in some instances only a few bones or a skull were recovered, it is assumed that the vault contains the remains of Confederate soldiers as well as Union troops.

Quartermaster General Montgomery Meigs ordered that these bodies be gathered and buried on this particular site, knowing that the presence of graves here would prevent the Lee family from inhabiting their house again.

The side of the memorial features this inscription:

BENEATH THIS STONE
REPOSE THE BONES OF TWO THOUSAND ONE HUNDRED AND ELEVEN UNKNOWN SOLDIERS
GATHERED AFTER THE WAR
FROM THE FIELDS OF BULL RUN, AND THE ROUTE TO THE RAPPAHANOCK,
THEIR REMAINS COULD NOT BE IDENTIFIED. BUT THEIR NAMES AND DEATHS ARE
RECORDED IN THE ARCHIVES OF THEIR COUNTRY, AND ITS GRATEFUL CITIZENS
HONOR THEM AS OF THEIR NOBLE ARMY OF MARTYRS. MAY THEY REST IN PEACE.
SEPTEMBER. A. D. 1866.
"Quartermaster General Montgomery Meigs ordered that these bodies be gathered and buried on this particular site, knowing that the presence of graves here would prevent the Lee family from inhabiting their house again". it's the Custis family house, and has nothing to do with honoring the south.

The Veterans Administration manages 157 National Cemeteries that also contain Confederate War dead. You can pick apart each memorial as you choose but the bottom line is you didn't know then or now what you're talking about. Those memorials honor Confederate war dead. Lee and Custis both owned slaves as well.

You have no moral judgement on men who publicly endorse slavery and armed rebellion against the United States. That is rather pathetic. Do you have moral judgement against Adoph Hitler or Timothy McVie?

What do you think? If you have to ask that question you are starting to become desperate at being right about something.

Let me help you be right about something. Was JD wrong about slavery? My answer: Yes

Did the slavery issue cause the War Between the States. My answer: NO

the dead buried behind at the Custis home was an insult to Robert Lee,and his family. It signaled the intent to take his land there. Do yourself a favor and start reading history books, stop pasting wikipedia articles. Go to the Custis home in Arlington, and look at the room Lee stayed in the night/morning he made the worst decision in his life. Go to the parks, memorials, and talk to the folks that work there. You could actually learn something. The confederate war dead are tucked back in a cul-de-sac across the fence from the bureau of personnel. Take the tour bus and for once, educate yourself. You come off as sorely lacking.

Let me repeat myself...Lee owned slaves. Lee inherited the slaves (approx. 300) when Custis died in 1857 but the slaves were not freed until 1862.

My point is that slavery was the cornerstone of the Confederacy, in their own words, so whatever glory you see in the Confederacy, and the Confederate flag, is forever tainted by the endorsement of slavery. Whatever other causes of the War, such as money, higher tariffs, etc. are also rather despicable reasons to march young men to their deaths in an act of treason against the United States, so where, exactly ,is the honor you keep talking about?
