I hope that teachers, students and parents aren't upset they have to learn science.

Alabama Adds Evolution Requirement, Climate Study for Schools

Alabama is updating its science standards to require that students understand evolution and learn about climate change.

Educators say the new rules don't require that students in the Bible Belt state believe in evolution or accept the idea that climate is changing globally.

But students will be required to understand the theory of evolution starting next year. And teachers will address climate change, which wasn't a focus in the state's previous, decade-old standards.

The state school board approved the new standards unanimously Thursday.

Director Steve Ricks of the Alabama Math, Science and Technology Initiative says the new guidelines show the state is serious about teaching science.

The statewide course of study only sets minimum standards. Local school officials will still make curriculum decisions.

Evolution has been a theory for well over a hundred and fifty years and nothing has come forward to remotely dispute it. I'd say it is a fact. Climate change has been a theory for about 20 years now, and the evidence to support it seems virtually overwhelming. I'd say it's a fact. That's kind of how science works.

If monkeys came from Alabamans, then why are there still Alabamans?

I'm not sure I see the big deal here. I've been out of school for 29 years and went to a private school (gasp!). We studied the theory of evolution in jr. high.
Is this another one of those 'Let's try to get a rise out of the conservatives on the forum' threads? :floor:

I know...preposterous right?
