Look who’s turning 103!

On August 25, 1916, President Woodrow Wilson signed the Organic Act creating the National Park Service "to conserve the scenery and the natural and historic objects and the wild life therein and to provide for the enjoyment of the same in such manner and by such means as will leave them unimpaired for the enjoyment of future generations."

Happy Birthday indeed. In most other countries the most prized lands, the most stunning views are privately owned. Not America. They are all of ours. I would encourage everyone to make it point to visit some of these spots. 60% of visitors to the parks are foreigners.

Personally visited: Smokies (many times), Arches, Bryce Canyon, Grand Canyon, Black Canyon of the Gunnison, Gateway Arch, Hot Springs. Favorite, far and away is Zion in SW Utah; just stunning.

If you have never watched the PBS series, "National Parks, America's Best Idea" by Ken Burns it is a must see. Peter Coyote narrates. EPIC.

But, it is socialism. And so is the Interstate highway system, and social security, and fire and police departments. How am I going to sleep well tonight realizing that some of my tax money will be used by FEMA to help aid hurricane victims?

I always find it funny that when the government shuts down, the only socialistic service conservatives care about is the least important one, national parks. It's hilarious!
