I'm guesing your point was this was under Bush? I agree, it's too much. But if we're going to pick sides and point figures:

republican lead congress:
108th - 1.16 trillion
109th - 1.05 trillion
------------------------
2.21 trillion

democrat lead congress:
111th - 3.22 trillion
110th - 1.96 trillion
------------------------
5.18 trillion

So based on these numbers, a republican lead congress does the least damage, by a factor > 2. ;-)

I am really hoping neither of these spending records will be repeated in the next session.

No, I really didn't have a point except the trendline has been going up for awhile and it is too damn much.

I hope nobody is forgetting that the 111th Congress had to factor in the costs of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars which were not in the budgets during the Bush years, and that the 111th had to deal with the bail-outs initiated during the last days President Bush. I'm sorry I had to mention the word Bush again, but it's just funny how his name comes up when you mention economic collapse.

Those numbers reflect total growth of debt, not budgets.

Since all seem to have a side in this issue, it will be very interesting to see how the new Congress responds to the debt issue. There is no doubt in my mind we are spending way to much and ignoring much waste when both could be more seriously addressed than they have been in the past. There will be some pain for everyone if we really seriously address the issue.
