13,000 protest Governor's plan to change collective bargaining for public employees

I think that in 2010 many of the functions unions originally served are obsolete because other agencies and protections are now commonplace.

OMG! Canoehead just sent me this update. The Democrats are running for the border - the state border that is, because if none of them are present, they cannot have the vote.

The governor has sent state troopers after them - if just 1 Democrat is present, the vote can go forward (the Repubs have complete control and can pass it without them).

Tx dems did something like this in 2003 over redistricting. They fled up to Ardmore, OK. It forced a temporary delay in the vote, made a point, but changed little.

This was a Tom Delay promoted redistricting which was promoted as a way to get more Republicans elected. It passed, but in 2006 the US Supreme Court ruled the new borders to be in violation of the Voting Rights Act of 1963. ..

"With action in the Texas House brought to a standstill, roughly 50 state Democratic representatives said they would remain in neighboring Oklahoma "as long as it takes" to block a Republican-drawn redistricting plan that could cost them five seats in Congress."

They can't afford to pay the overpriced negotiated salaries and benefits. It has to change.

Using sick leave and encouraging students to rally to make their point is unacceptable. Elected officials walking out on a vote not doing their paid job is even worse.

The people of Wisonsin overwhelmingly want these necessary changes.

I've been torn on this one - can't decide if I think this is a long overdue change that is what is needed to make the budget work or the governor overstepping his bounds.

So far what I have read as far as what he is asking for from them seems very reasonable - especially when compared to the private sector and public employees in other states.

Either way, it's damn entertaining!
