AR destroyed my youngest child's love of reading so I am not a huge fan. IMHO, it is best used as a motivational tool, not the curriculum. But the company would tell you differently.

Ditto that IWIWT. AR Did the same thing to my son. I am NOT a fan at all. At my son's school, AR points are 30% of their English grade. By the 7th grade, I am sure that MOST kids can read and comprehend. I just think they should be teaching the fundamentals of English. I think it is a cop-out for the teachers. Just my two cents.

Ditto that. My son read constantly before that (of course we did manage the TV and other such brain-to-jelly stuff). Only last 3-4 years has he begin to slide back into reading for entertainment...

You are lucky. My daughter 19, still refuses to read. She laughs at her sister and myself who love to read. Maybe in time it will return.

Another DITTO. The AR tests are questions to see if the kid read the book, having little or nothing to do with understanding the content of the book. There's enough rote learning out there without piling it on with AR reading.

Our librarian is receptive and has ordered tests for my daughter when she'd find a book she really wanted to read but the school didn't have the test. You get kids come into the library looking for a book to read based on the # of AR points it has. How lame!

Doesn't sound like Reading Is Funn to me!

Here the AR points are only 10% of the grade, which I guess reflects that the District (or maybe the school :idontno: ) doesn't attach as much importance to it as at your school KD. I can say that AR is not a favorite with many LA teachers at our school. They don't have a choice though.

Thanks Kurt!! I really appreciate being able to check in with Sowal anytime I want. If I had my way we would be there most of the time! (or all of the time) I am happy to have all the Sowal friends too! I always know if I need information, information I will get!!!! Great Job!!!! clap_1:

AR Tangent:

He doesn't read because he has to for school, he reads because, get this......he LIKES to. Unbelievable. However, that will change soon as he's on the 11th Lemony Snicket & I think there are only 2 more?

Anway, back to the Kurt thread.......
