As promised, the District 3 office of the Florida Department of Transportation is stepping up its plans for the expansion of U.S. 331, technically known as State Road 83 in Walton County. An important date is December 17th, a few weeks from now, when the expanded letters of interest for Phase I are due at the office. Probably the next even more important date is not as far away as you might think, May 21st, then June 12th, when the FDOT will award the design and construction then execute the contract.

As Walton was asked to step up and help pay for some of the expansion by funding $75 million for a new second bridge over the bay, the FDOT promised to make sure all the projects to I-10, or State Road 8, were also completed. While these sections have been looked at, there was little to no funding. With the FDOT’s commitment, residents and visitors could have a wider road before too many more years.

When negotiating with the county, the FDOT said they would work to expedite the process and make sure all the segments north of Highway 20 were widened as well as the new second bridge built. The section from the bridge to Highway 20 is already funded and started.

The FDOT lists the timeline for the design and construction of the new segments. The list dates ends in about 7 months with the real project starting. The FDOT has completed 90% of the design and said they will take an unusual action, they will proceeded with the design and construction even if all the easement property has not been acquired.
